I’ve been with the bank over a year now and had issues with my team lead being rude and condescending since day 1.I’m the last of the people I started with, 1 quit and the other 2 moved internally and they both hated her also. She accused me of not being in office last week when I was in fact there and she didn’t come in all week. Is this enough to have a conversation with my MD that I refuse to work under her when she comes back from maternity leave in August (she leaves March 7)

Maybe frame it as a concern about team dynamics and productivity rather than just singling her out, but definitely highlight the impact her behavior has had on you and your colleagues. You deserve to work in an environment where you feel respected and supported, not constantly belittled and undermined.

Have you documented any of this? Have you spoken to human resources to the other people who moved internally mention this to Human Resources?

Worth bringing up to your MD, but make it a conversation rather than a refusal to work under her. Hopefully your MD is reasonable and will hear you out.

I have a friend who would frame it as “hey can I get some coaching”

And I would also be ready with 2-3 ways you think you could better engage to seem like a problem solver not a problem child

As a lead, I would hope the people under me would come to me first but it seems as though this may not be the best option. I would suggest starting with a conversation with their supervisor on how you feel and different ways for you to approach the situation to find a solution. Then ask to have a follow up meeting in a timely manner to review if things got better or not. That’s when you would have the conversation to have another lead.

August is a long way away. I would look at her leave period as an opportunity for you to demonstrate your leadership skills to your seniors (and to have some relief from her unkind behavior). Who knows, maybe you’ll get promoted or find a new, better role before she returns from leave? Teams re-org all the time of BofA, I wouldn’t set an ultimatum in February regarding an employee who is away until August.

In a recent round of layoffs, my team had a lady who was pregnant added while everyone else on their team had been let go. In my old firm, there’s a guy whose team was eliminated when he was on pat leave… he ended up on the top of the “retrain and redeploy” list and is somehow still at the firm

Have you seen women wear ties and "masculine"-looking suits to work? Was it accepted by client and team? I've never worn a tie to work, but when I've worn clothing that had a more "masculine" fit either in grad school or some work environments, I've gotten comments and looks, or sometimes asked (or people gossiped) about my orientation. When I wear more "feminine"-looking clothing, I feel more more uncomfortable and awkward. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I started a new job as an “office manager” at the end of January. The duties seem to align more with those of an EA, and I’m ok with that. Except my boss is a control freak. He scolds me over every little thing, how I load the dishwasher, maybe I didn’t push my chair in. Last week he told me I needed to work on my appearance. I was shocked. I bought all new clothes from Ann Taylor that are perfectly acceptable for business casual. He hates me. Move on ASAP or try to stick it out ?

DE&I is now a core leadership competency. If you are managing diverse talent, it’s important to understand what the term “privilege” means within a DE&I context so you can lead your team to higher levels of inclusivity+develop optimal strategies for solutioning around team issues/challenges. Everyone has some aspect of privilege depending upon the context. Privilege means the absence of obstacles/barriers, not necessarily the presence of perks. Though some would say *that* itself is a perk.

I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!
