Do you know the range for the position? I would put more weight on that. If your range is 70-90 and company range is 60-80 then 70 isn’t horrible because companies rarely high at the top of the range. But if the numbers were reversed they are basically saying they believe you have the minimum requirements for the job by believing your salary should be at the bottom of the pay band for the position.
You need to counter offer so you show them that you are serious about. Sometimes companies gave you a ridiculous offer but expect you to bring something more reasonable. Please don’t get discouraged.
Understand that the employer will use your bottom figure. They will pay no attention to your high figure. They aren't looking for how much they can pay. Like you, when you are shopping for a deal, you don't offer top dollar being asked.
Where are you experience and credential wise? If above mid-range, your starting pay should reflect this. Otherwise, negotiate or preference should be for another employer.
Don't give them a wide range to begin with. If you're willing to work for $60 to $90,000 for example. Say $80 to $90,000.
I don't usually give a range. I usually ask them what their range is and then go at the higher end of their range. I don't want to pigeon hole myself into a salary before knowing their range.
