You spec is good, but having such little produced work at your level is a red flag for many.

Not necessarily given it’s mostly small shops
The talent is there. Your bio is well written and made me smile. The Activision idea is very fun. But maybe being in a smaller ad market affected how much production opportunity you were afforded. I would be more upfront about that fact, which would explain why you have so much spec work in your book.
As for the work, just three specific comments. Brooks feels like it’s a spot more for physical strength. I would pull it or rewrite it. Piggybacking does no equate to the love of running for me.
Activision is really fun. The art direction feels over the top slightly, I loose the brand and don’t make an immediate connect. Maybe dial down the flower power and dial up the metal gear solid without loosing the message.
Penguin is fun as well, but the art direction is everything everywhere all at once. Your craft is exceptional, but pick one aesthetic and stick with it. Right now the idea is getting lost in the variety of its expression.
Hope that all helps. Good luck dude.
Thanks for the kind words and advice:)
17 years as an AD and you’re showing a book of spec work? I just don’t understand. Your Magnolia Street Band poster work on your IG account is great, and should be in your book.
I hear ya. I know how it looks, but like I said above, not all of my produced work is worth showing. Produced doesn’t always equal good. Thanks on the band posters - some of those pieces will definitely be going back in.
Would you ever consider working in studio art or design? You clearly have talent, just need to break into a good creative shop.
Possibly. Feel free forward my link to whomever or DM me if you’d like to chat.
Being in these third tier markets is a problem if you want to do better work. When you say you are fed up with how your career has gone, what version of it would you want? Are you willing to relocate? What agencies would you want to work for?
I’m pretty sure Mullen left Winston-Salem. My father-in-law did storyboards for them for years. Now he’s helping The Variable on occasion.

First, good for you for taking that step to jump start your career. You have talent.
However, in some instances, you might have too many ideas going for you.
It might help simplify your book to just focus on one per campaign. For example, the print and OOH for Coffree are telling two different stories. One is about listening to your body. The other is simply explaining why caffeine is a problem for some people.
Consider focusing on one. For what it’s worth it, the OOH was the clearest to me. Those could also easily be print ads.
Same for the Brooks work. Each ad is almost a different idea, except for the last two. Those were the same and the clearest. If you could get one more in that vein, you’d be golden.
Also consider adding a simple line that pays off the idea beyond “running is life”.
Across the board, not sure the scripts are really buying you much of anything.
I’d also take out the thing about being 50. People don’t need to know how old you are. They just need to know how you think. Don’t give them the chance to be biased.
Also, maybe consider giving your whole career a restart. You could potentially get a better job in a better shop if you started as a junior AD. That said, you’re also a pretty decent writer. Maybe that’s something to consider, too.
Thank you for taking the time to give thoughtful feedback - all good advice. I definitely see what you mean about Brooks and Caribou, and yeah the age thing, I guess I was trying to “own it”, but you’re right about not handing out ammunition.
Just wanna say - you’ve got some good stuff in here. I don’t know what the right move for you is, but you have talent. Great art. Good headlines. I agree with another commenter that maybe the scripts are hurting you more than helping you.
I hope this works out for you.
One thing you could try - freelance. That will allow you to get the money your years of experience demand with less risk from agencies hiring someone without a track record of produced work. It might also help you get more produced work in your book that you like. This isn’t the best moment for it in the market, but maybe within the next year you could give that a shot?
Thanks for the kind words. I hear ya on the scripts / boards especially since most of the real work hasn’t happened yet (on set and editing). And yes, I’m definitely open to freelance. Please, feel free to forward to whomever might be interested. Thanks again:)
