This is how all of life works. It comes down to connections. Nobody is going to just give you a job for getting a degree. You have to network like crazy. If you aren’t aggressively networking you are not going to find a job.
I have to agree with their response. I've been to networking events and most of the time they never stick by their word.
You should also take into consideration that the industry is EXTREMELY slow at the moment due to the writers strike. It’s not just you.
I'm in the same boat as you, my friend. Graduated college last year, still working the same part time that I've been at for a little over 3 years, and still can't find any work 13 months after said graduation. It's not easy out here but we have to keep pushing forward, it's all we can do 👍🏻
I wrote a book specifically for people in your situation. I got my first job in the entertainment industry with no experience. My degree was in something else. I explain in the book how I did it.
I also explain how unions work, who does what on a shoot, how development works... the book is an entire film curriculum.
My first big job was the original "Law & Order."
The book is "Mickey Rooney Was Right." Get it through AuthorHouse.com and nowhere else. Get the hardcover.

It's rough out there, especially with the strikes happening and production non-existent. Try to find a survival job in the meantime, and build out your social circle, being particular about connecting with people who have similar career ambitions. These relationships have been way more fruitful for me career-wise, than any other kinds of networking.
If you want to qualify for internship roles and need to prove that you can get credit for it, look into enrolling in internship classes at Santa Monica College. You're effectively paying to work though.
