Completely normal for someone to cover while you’re out and to not tell you - you’re on maternity leave. Assuming it’s your relationship and there will be new projects moving forward, just email the client to let them know you’re back and thank the colleague for covering.
Yup, I’d just take it back over and thank your colleague as if that was all part of the plan (which it could’ve/should’ve been). Good luck!
Unfortunately, this behavior could also indicate purposeful strategy aimed at pushing a new parent out of the firm. I have seen this push out happen numerous times, either with low hours or hours designed to frustrate parenting duties.
I suggest discussing this further in the Women in Law bowl.
This happened to me coming back from maternity leave and it’s a complete pretense to push you out of the firm. Year I was going up for partner too. I talked to the partners - no mistakes, no issues. There was redemption here, but took a different form than you would expect. Feel free to send me a DM if you want and I’m happy to share more about the experience.

Agree, just reach out and say you’re excited to ramp back up and get involved!
What were you expecting? It’s normal for a colleague to cover while you’re on maternity leave. Are you saying that the client is staying with the other colleague? If that’s the case, just have a conversation with the partner to ask what happened and reiterate that you’re looking forward to jumping back in.
If it's your client, you would control the billings and assignments.
