Just got rejected from McKinsey. Got to the partner round but the only thing I got dinged on was the math section (problem was a bit abstract). A bit disappointed, but I do have other offers, so I guess I should revel in that fact. Onward and upward! On the bright side, I no longer have to stay up late night to prep for the interviews and have more time to try for any other roles if I like!

Good luck to those still pursuing MBB, especially from B4!

They strung you along all the way to the partner round just to ding you on a math problem? Why would they do that? I hate interviewing.

likesmartfunny

Yeah, I also found it a bit strange to be dinged on only the math but that’s verbatim what the recruiter told me. What can you do haha.

like

OP, I just got an offer from McK and what I would say is the math seemed super unimportant during my case. As in, if you do it wrong maybe it hurts you, but doing it right is never enough to stand out…

My honest guess is that the team just didn’t think you had whatever “it” factor they were looking for and blamed the math as the determining factor. It’s hard to tell an applicant the truth because it’s not something necessarily you did “wrong” but just rather that they just weren’t compelled, for whatever reason.

Congrats on your other offers, I’m sure you’ll kill it 😃

Thanks for the clarification McK 1!

Respect man for your attempt. I can’t get myself to prep for interviews as I’ve not interviewed for almost 10 yrs now.

like

You’ve been at D for 10y? Kudos!

like

OP, what was the math question? Was it like ‘how much is the projected net profit if a client expands its market that can add $XB to gross profit for that region, increase the operating cost by this but because there is relax trade agreements between the neighboring countries that the revenue from those are projected to decrease by a rate equal to or leas than the tangent of the total gross profit (in GAAP)?

Something like that…

I admire your ability to just move on and focus on what’s ahead

like

Yeah I’m now wise enough to know it’s not the end of the world. Plus McK wasn’t my end goal, it was just something I wanted to tick off my list.

There's a lot more to life than being here, believe me. All the best, you got this!

I had a math problem during an interview for my first job in banking. Could tell the PM interviewing me didn’t care so when he gave it to me I said “honestly, I’m not great at mental math, that’s why calculators were invented”. He laughed, we shot the sh*t for the remaining 20 mins, and I got the job. Play to your strengths

like

I guess I should provide the disclaimer that this might only work 10% of the time? 😅

Sometimes you get feedback like this because there was other PEI feedback that factored into the decision but they don’t typically give specific feedback on that.

like

Hmm actually in the previous rounds I did get feedback on PEI, but again I’m sure they can’t divulge all the details re a rejection.

Congrats on making it this far and also on your other offers!

Which are of McK were you applying to/which MO are you transitioning out of? I too am in the process of applying (currently reaching out and speaking to some folks that I know @ McK).

McK Digital. Currently in enterprise performance at D.

Hi All,

Need some career advice.

I have a year of experience in a clinical ops role where learning is quite stagnant. Which organisations/startups/roles should one apply to being a non-technical applicant with a masters in biotechnology?

It would be really helpful to get your guidance on further course of action.

TIA!

[help] I have an offer that’s quite good, and they gave me until Monday to decide. I have a final round at another firm on Monday (fastest they can do) that I would prefer, both because of the work and the pay. Is it really bad to accept one offer and then potentially cancel it if I get a better offer a day or two later?
