During the prep call, the recruiter said I would either me given an offer, or, even if they hired a different candidate and I passed the loop, that they'd offer me to a different team. The email, however, says they're going to ...

So, I had the same thing happen to me for AWS. You have to keep trying though. Sometimes it just isn’t the right team for you. And you want to escape that now….keep applying. Keep pushing. Sometimes a rejection is the best thing for you.
You won’t see that now, but you will in the future. I know if I would have gotten the job at AWS. I would have never ended up at MSFT…and I love it here!

I've had not-so-exciting experience with Amazon (interview canceled last min, constant discussions with recruiters, then they don't respond to let me know one way or another on positions we discussed).

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Tough times, getting knocked down, and ultimately failing is the only way we grow and learn. There are so many variables that go into getting roles for any big tech company right now that you can't dwell on it for long. If it is meant to be it will be. I had a similar experience with Amazon and they weren't even allowed to tell me where I could have improved and why I didn't get the role, I felt defeated. A year later I'm at a better role at Salesforce.

Some things really are beyond our efforts and our control, I'm coming to understand.
I'm sorry you had this experience. That recruiter should never have told you that those were your options before the on site, that's not their place to say. I hired many people when I was at Amazon and the recruiter has no say in those decisions. What you received was a no hire, no recycle decision so you are back at the very beginning.

(Side note: I'm having a hard time accepting rejection and getting up and moving on: I've been looking to leave my job after they rejected my salary change request after a title change and realizing how underpaid and overworked I am. It's been almost 7 months of taking a bootcamp and applying to jobs with 2 full interviews. I know it's normal, as this forum has helped me to realize, but I feel so stuck and almost wonder if I am just not meant to get into tech. Side note, ~5 YOE as an analyst @ 76k)
Right! The false sense of hope feels extra bad. I understand where it's coming from, though. But even today, I got a notification on LinkedIn that one of the interviewers looked at my LinkedIn... again, after already looking at it after the interview. Just leave me to find closure in peace hahah
The loop is a doozy and it’s a horrible feeling going through it and then getting a no. However, you should be really proud of yourself for making it to your loop (most people don’t).
The fact that they are re-entering you in the database means that you are well-qualified for amazon. Know that we do flat out reject people and many do not get recycled/ put back in the system and have to wait a year to apply again. My team has hired several people in your shoes. I know it sucks, but keep your head up! This isn’t a hard no.
I would look on the job site and see if you can find other roles that you’re well qualified for, then write to the recruiter and see if they can give you any insight into them.

I sincerely appreciate your positive attitude and encouragement! This is some really fantastic insight. I wasn't sure if my email was indicative of a flat out rejection, so I am refueled with some hope, thanks to you!
Also some really great advice about connecting with the recruiter again. Between my interview and receiving the rejection today, I'd already applied to several similar roles with Amazon, so I will reach out to see if they know of any inside angles regarding those roles.

I went through the Amazon loop in May and learned in June that I wasn't selected. It took me almost a month to get over it. Since then I've had a coffee chat with another Amazon recruiter who wasn't involved in my candidacy and my recruiter and they both were very helpful in getting me to understand the process and why it's important to keep trying even if you don't make it in the first time.
It does take a lot out of you but they saw something in us to take us through the process and that is saying a lot. Without the offer it doesn't mean much at the time, but once you process everything fully you won't feel so bad. Many people don't make it on their first try but get hired at Amazon later or get great jobs at other tech companies. Process and feel your feelings and know you will get to the other side.
Today when I was super disengaged and mentally exhausted, I got a call from another dream tech company for a phone screen tomorrow!

This sounds like a recycle so they liked you as a candidate but another candidate was seen as a better fit. Ultimately you didn’t fail on LP values and can interview again.

The opposite happened to me, I performed horribly in the assessments and I somehow got the loop, and I skipped half the questions in the loop but still got an offer. I was shocked but took it, since it'll give me brand value. I went in with almost no prep, I didn't even memorize all the LPs or prepare examples on them.
That's honestly pretty crazy, but it worked out for you and I'm glad! I get your sentiment about the brand value, that's where my head was at about the opportunity, too. Happy it worked out, but wow!
You do know how many applications they receive, right? you could answer every question perfectly and there still may be another part of your work history, personality, etc. where another candidate is a better fit. One of my friends was an amazon recruiter. If they say they will keep your info and keep you in mind for other roles, they mean it, on the bright side.
Absolutely - I know I am just another data point and someone else likely had a more suitable overall package. It is nice to at least know they'll hold onto my info. It's just the process of coming to grips with the full-on rejection that's hard because Amazon (and many companies in general) does not offer feedback. Just thought I could lean into the community for some similar stories for support. I appreciate you sharing your perspective!

I wouldn’t agree with the overworked part.. there are time when you work long hours and there are times where you have work life balance.. you seem like you are young, you have the energy so use it while you can
On the part about the interview, sometimes it could be a interviewers negative opinion that can cause rejection.
I would suggest keep applying, and review your stories again, see if you have enough no of stories, did the stories have enough detail, were there challenges in the stories that you had to overcome, etc. refine your stories
1 common thing I see when candidates do is respond to the question with very little detail.. tell it like a story, what were the tough part, how did you overcome them, if there is nothing challenging in your story that you overcame, find another story
That actually happened to me, someone else ended up getting the role because they were further along in the process than me. I did eventually land a role a few weeks later within that same org though.
