What’s the minimum total comp I should get if asked to move to SF or NY from a LCOL city? I have 2 yoe

I would not move for under $120K. Most folks directly out of undergrad are getting $100K all in at the very least.

like

120 @LCOL >>> than 135k in SF

That depends on how much you make rn

@A1 You’d need to look at the earnings potential to see if it’s a good move for you. If you’re earning $120K with 2 YOE in LCOL and can continue getting significant raises might make sense to stay. When I moved here I got $120K and got lucky and am now getting $300K 5 years later. Most folks are self optimizing, they wouldn’t stay in these cities if it was not worth it for them.

Depends are where you are at in your career, family situation, and what you make now. I wouldn't even consider it for less than $300k, though that's with 20 YOE and supporting a family of 4.

That's seems to be on the low end I would think, though I have a different perspective, being almost as close to retirement as you are to starting. You will have a decent life, with pocket money, but you'll need a few raises before considering owning a home in that area.

You should look up the exact COL for your town, to figure out what percentage above or below that your current comp is. Then just make sure your TC in the new town is at least that percentage above the town's COL. That'll ensure you maintain your quality of life and takes the guesswork out of it.

I would expect $15k higher, or around that.

TLDR: 100k raise for your situation. There is NO WAY I’d consider moving for a 15kish raise. I plugged in 117,00 in nerd wallets COL calculator for Raleigh NC to SF. It came to say 117 is equivalent to 243 in SF. Note these sometimes overstate as they assume similar housing situation. Also knowing you specific city would help

$500k is the min in those areas for me. You can survive on way less, but your living a scrub lifestyle. If your young and single and just want to be in the city, 250-350k. Any less you will be living in a closet or need roomates or you are spending your life commuting from a suburb.

I would likely pick any US firm over any MBB at home, given the financial considerations.
