Who the fck is paying attention to how you’re focusing during meetings? Unless you’re falling asleep, why does it matter?! How does this correlate to project timelines ?!
I've obviously gazed off, or doodled on a sheet of paper or even "rehearsed" my talk. That's with meds. To those who take exception, I just apologize, chuckle and move on. It sucks but don't beat yourself up. Just keep improving.
During meetings, I do "lights, camera, action" pretend you are being recorded for a movie or something
Keep your camera off. I haven’t turned mine on in 4 years.
My managers also don’t turn their camera on. My Director doesn’t either. Nobody does.
I struggle with feeling overly sensitive to constructive feedback (I felt like moreso than others) and so I started to do some research. I saw something called "Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria" in many people with ADHD. I've read through some of the suggestions to help with RSD and I think they've been helpful for me.
First of all give yourself some grace. It seems you are really seeking and implementing strategies to improve and the fact that you’re aware is a major step. Is there a way you can seek professional support? If not what is causing your lack of focus in the meetings? Is there a way you can increase 1:1s with your manager to ensure you are understanding takeaways from meetings. Can you implement tools such as meeting transcription tools? Are you being provided meeting agendas ahead of time to stay on track?
See if you can request debrief meetings with a colleague or your manager to tackle action plans. This would include your manager to get meeting summary, and deadlines reiterate action items and deadlines. They should be working with you after meetings to break them down in smaller chunks and invisible formats such as a project tracker or white board with deadlines. Our brains are motivated by urgency so we need deadlines.
If it’s cameras on, I put my notes on the screen with camera. That way it looks like I’m paying attention while I take notes.
If you have Copilot, see if you can ask Copilot to summarize the meeting for due outs.
If the meetings are virtual, ask if everyone is okay for you to record them. We do this a lot in audit when we interview clients about their control processes.
Do you have accommodations in place?
With all due respect, higher ups/HR ultimately care about the result and the final product. It's not their responsibility to care for your ADHD symptoms, that is on us
Take constructive feedback in the spirit in which it is offered, it is NOT rejection or an indication of your unworthiness. Plus, I got used to it. My cheeks still may flush and an observer would think I'm upset but I focus on how to compensate for the shortcoming. If possible, I perform the compensatory activity or meditate on my improvement, and I generally overcome the problem (enough). Acting in the way neurotypicals expect, takes me a lot of time, effort and focus. There are no shortcuts to compensatory self- accommodations.
