Yes but the transition was possible only because 1) while in the recruiting role I worked on other projects in the company that gave me HC/ OD experience 2) I volunteered my time with nonprofits to consult on how to improve their full cycle recruiting processes so that gave me experience leading and building projects, and speaking with senior leaders 2) I got my masters in IO and was then hired into consulting
Being in consulting takes a certain drive, work ethic, ability to use critical thinking to solve problems/suggest solutions, ability to navigate areas of grey, facilitate leaderships conversations, understand, analyze and present data to suggest next steps, and a lot of initiative and organizational skills. I’d say that anyone going from a purely operational role where you have step by step scripts and a handbook on what your responsibilities are may find consulting difficult because there are always areas of grey, & you have to have the type A personality. If you’re in a more junior role, you need to learn to manage up, and take the initiative to understand new processes and industries, and ways to make life easier for your seniors, by getting in front of potential asks and deliverables, seeking feedback and engaging the right people. At least that’s been my experience and what I’ve observed
Appreciate your response, M1. From what I’ve seen, I would absolutely agree with the attributes piece and feel like I have developed many of those throughout the 6 years I’ve been in recruiting, especially over the most recent 3 years. Do you feel like getting your masters in IO was beneficial looking back? I’ve thought about doing this myself with night classes.

Yeah, I’ve seen it. It’s all about networking and talking to the right people and expressing your interest. I’m not sure about the other firms but I know Deloitte is emphasizing a lot in recruitment strategy so you may be a good fit there
