Some students surprise you outside of class and remind you there’s a lot more to them than what you see at school. Those moments are a great lesson to stay open-minded and never judge too quickly. It's been an eye opener for me several times.
Yes! I’ve had a challenging time with a student who is brilliant but cannot follow a direction to save his life, struggles with his peers, and often times completes activities incorrectly unless you’re checking in on him. I was about ready to call home and mention my concerns when the parents reached out to me to just see how everything was going socially and academically. They shared some super important details about him and I feel like I’m seeing him in a completely new light! I’m so glad I had that chat in October rather than April!
Awe that is so nice! i have definitely had this experience as well. Truthfully, kids want and need structure and sometimes they need someone to be a little hard on them.
I’m sure we all do. It’s just rare that we have the opportunity to learn our assumptions are wrong. You were blessed to have that experience.
I make wrong assumptions all of the time. That's why I am extra careful not to assume until I get to know the child. Some children will open up right away and sometimes it takes months before they feel comfortable talking to someone. Some of the kids I teach lead really rough lives. All I can do is love them and try to give them support. That's why kids join gangs, because they don't have family support at home so they join gangs to have a "family."
Yes I do!!! Kids can have a lot to share outside of our rigid curriculum. Let's give them space in our morning meetings or time to share in class, especially after the weekends!!!
