Total comp feels low. You're going to be working your ass off in this role. Make sure your shares will not be diluted in the future.
How many YoE?
I’m well aware. It’s going to be hard ass work but hopefully it will pay off in $, exits, etc.
Sequoia, a16z, I'd take it. You can make money later. The sheer experience is worth it, if you're hustling.
Thanks M1! That’s where my heads at now. It’s really the most derisked it could be considering it’s an early stage startup. The nature of the product will probably either sell within 3 years or be enduring (obv if it doesn’t die).
I already have a good VC network and have been deep in interviews with tier 2/3 funds so it prob won’t be too difficult after all this (I that’s what I still want to do)
I’d be thinking about how quickly we can burn up that cash to get to series A so I can get that pay bump. Both high cost of living states and if tier 1 VCs throwing money in, and you are this early into the company...either comp or equity should be commensurate. I’ve been a chief of staff...it can be a very strategic role with daily executive leadership exposure and influence that preps you to own a P&L or it can be an administrative function. Make it the former
It’s definitely the former. There’s no time for an administrative role but good advice nonetheless! It’s really first biz hire
I was offered 90k with similar experience last year for a chief of staff role at a startup, based in Seattle. Would push higher
Comp (he said there was wiggle room and after we raise series A I should expect a bump):
$80k
.2%
75% healthcare / benefits
I have an interest in VC (interviewed with well respected funds) and currently work at a tier 2/3 consultancy. I am a good networker and hustler :)
The company is small, <12 employees and I will be in charge of Growth, Recruiting, CX, Ops, etc.
They have raised $5mm seed from tier one VCs (Sequoia, a16z, KP, Lightspeed).
What should I be thinking about?
Founder was previously VP of product at a unicorn and well known one at that.
Total comp is waaaaaay too low for those cities. You should be aiming for $110-120k base minimum
A1 idk where you’re working but it’s def not big 4/below. If that’s true that’s great, but I’m sure we all know folks doing jt
In my mind, I feel like I should be aiming for 1% and like maybe 5k more. I already max my 401k and we’re not going to be cash rich. Raising won’t be an issue. Thoughts?
What does chief of staff do?
I think it’s a sexy title right now. Traditionally they are either more administrative or take care of strategic projects (fundraising, growth, etc))
My role will span biz dev, growth, recruiting and ops for a specific niche vertical within the company.
I think this role is more akin to coo than cos
