Just reflecting on how I got to this point in my life. If you think about it, none of us set out to work in insurance when we went to college. Yet, here we are. What was your gateway into the insurance game? Like, what was your first job at which agency?

I applied for a secretary job at a local agency. Got it, enjoyed the work and things just kind of took off from there. I went in figuring it was just a temporary thing, not a career, but ten years later and I'm still here.

like

This happened to a Kaiser Permanente leader. She took a temp admin job over the summer, decided to stay, and now she's the Regional President!

I just graduated and needed a full-time position. One of my classmate was already working as a claim adjuster and they were hiring so he made a referral. After two years I moved to UW. My degree is in Finance. In college I thought I would be working in Corporate Finance, not insurance. But here we are 20 years later.

like

That's a really interesting question. I think for me it was about finding something in a bad job market and just sort of drifting along in my life. I don't mind insurance, but it was never my dream and it is certainly not my passion.

I think that's a lot of people in insurance, to be honest. I don't know of anybody who dreamed of working in insurance, we all just sort of ended up here and stuck around.

like

I came into it through marketing. I needed a job, and I knew there were some types of companies I just couldn't feel good about promoting. Kaiser seemed like one I could feel good about. Here I am still, 20 years later.

I applied for a recruiting position at a brokerage 4 years ago and I love it. Although I'm not an agent, I see where there is really good money in insurance not to mention you are building your own clientele and helping people in the process.

Have an acquaintance who is a single mom; she purchased a used car 3 mos ago. Six wks later her 17yo wrecked it, air bags deployed, and estimates have ranged between $10-$18k in needed repairs while $21k is still owed. Acquaintance was switching insurance policies and flubbed the coverage dates and there were a few days where the vehicle was uninsured. No GAP insurance. I'm not seeing many options for her besides to continue pmts, fixing just enough to drive or voluntary repo. Thoughts?

Anyone from Embark able to tell me about some benefits you have. Like how long is Paternity leave and do you have to be with the firm for a year to use it? Also what health insurance do you have? I saw that Embark fully pays premiums but if it’s a junk insurance company then that’s not so great haha.
Also how often are you traveling / in office? Thanks!

Hey small agency friends with kids! Quick question. Our agency’s family health care is expensive (ranges from $1700/mon with normal deductible to $1100/mon with super high deductible). If anyone out there (at a small NYC agency) has a better plan and is comfortable sharing, would you mind telling me who your company uses? My kids’ college funds thank you!

1 week sober! Over the last 12 years (I’m early 30s) I’ve reached this point just a handful of times. Alcohol is deeply intertwined into my social life much like everyone’s is I imagine. Just starting this journey so thank you in advance to this community as I’m ready to learn from you all and be a part. Let’s go!

New to Toronto, moved to the west end of town/ just past - in Etobicoke. I celebrate my 40th a few days after NYE/NYD - would love some recommendations on moderately priced but nice ambiance restaurants for myself + husband, and my extended family. Everyone is scattered throughout (Hamilton, Barrie, Lyle, Newmarket, North York). Don’t want anything too fancy but don’t really know where or what is good and not downtown.

Any recommendations? (Open to GTA of course).

I found a company I was really excited about working at. I applied for the job and went through 5 rounds of interviews. At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!
