If you are thinking of starting a law practice or growing one with little or no capital, you need to get the book, “Starting & Growing a Law Practice without Breaking the Bank.
It was written based on personal experience and research. I started my practice 11 years ago in the middle of the 2008/2009 recession with about $500 and I have grown the practice significantly over the years using affordable and available resources.
I also coach solo practitioners and small firm attorneys. https://www.amazon.com/Starting-Growing-Practice-Without-Breaking/dp/1099523303

I would recommend conducting legal research or creating case summaries so you can understand the nuances of the law. And keep asking for work!
Thank you, I have been doing that! I know I need to catch up on the law since I'm new to the jurisdiction!
It's not really billable but get familiar with some of the standard motions, like motions to relocate, or motions to modify, or motions to restrict. Get the most recent case law on them. See if your firm has filed any of those recently. Build up your 'form' database for when you do end up busy.
How about you start looking for groups, clubs as a way to network and begin bringing business to the firm. I am the firm administrator of a family law firm and we love when our associates take the initiative to bring in business. Also if you are new to the area, it's a way to meet new people ! Good luck to you
In my area which is between Baltimore & DC, most events are all virtual BUT, the point is still the same. I am sure you will circulate your name, get to know people and begin your book. Best of luck to you
I feel Family Law has its times when it is busy and slow. Use this time to do some CLEs and refresh your memory on anything that is different in the state your are now in compared to the state where you were. Typically the end of August is slow so hopefully after Labor Day things will pick up again!
Yes there is an ebb and flow, just hard to see it when you just start at a firm. Family law can move so rapidly too and cases can settle or blow up so fast.
