Just trying to figure this out. I had a phone interview and the recruiter says the job is paying $21/hr, but the job posting says 54k - 71k a year. Please make it make sense.

Have a copy of the ad and call the recruiter back and let them know the the range the ad mentions and ask for a reason why the actual pay mentioned is different from what is being advertised. A lot of times the range is based on experience - if you have it you should be paid for your expertise. In NY it employers are required to give pay ranges.

Good luck!

Companies will put inflated numbers in job postings just to pull people in. And then when you talk to them the number is considerably lower. No way of knowing if that's what is happening here, but it wouldn't be surprising. Major red flag!

like

Yeah, that's not even close. I wonder if they possibly got the jobs mixed up? Definitely reach out and see about getting some clarification because that's a huge bait and switch if it wasn't an honest mistake.

like

Did you ask the recruiter about that discrepancy? I do think lately there have been huge discrepancies with pay listed online and what people actually talk about once you're in the interviews. All you can really do is question them/push back a little, and if they won't budge, tell them you can't accept the offer. Still might be worth doing the interviews though if you think you could negotiate an offer

Is this role hourly? Is there mandatory overtime? Maybe it includes potential for other compensation that is not $$ based - like Tuition reimbursement, recurring bonus or commissions, or other benefits not reflected in the hourly rate.

like

Sometimes they add in the over time as an hourly employee but are posted as a salary range instead of an hourly pay. You could be making 54k-71k, it can be very deceiving

Can you follow up with them to see if they can explain what’s going on?

I was approached on LinkedIn for an early career recruiting role in DFW, TX. I don't have direct experience, but I have the university experience/connections from working in career services. This is the first time I've considered work outside of higher education. I said my salary expectations are minimum $90k and that didn't seem to be an issue. Am I asking too little, too much? How can I know I'm getting the best salary and not just settling at the low end of the range?

I received a job offer from company A and am currently negotiating salary. I have an interview with company B next week and know that they offer a higher base pay. There’s no guarantee that I will be offered a job at company B but my gut is telling me that company B would be a better fit for me. Should I accept the offer from company A, continue interview process with company B and then rescind my offer with company A if company B offers me a job? Will I be burning bridges?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!
