Laid off. I’d like to temp/freelance (for cheap) somewhere I can learn digital at the technical level at a much more junior role. Possible? So many digital jobs and I can’t qualify for many of them.

Find someone at an agency that can help you get in. I’ve been in process of doing something similar, making a change, not digital specific and it’s taken someone inside recommending me. Recruiters don’t help and solo approaches to people didn’t work for me. It’s a smart move but tough. Good luck!

How technical are we talking? Are you looking to completely switch departments or you just want to work at a digital agency?

So you’re in media now? Seems like you can take a course, launch a campaign for a small business for a low fee and then definitely can score a gig at an agency. I wouldn’t promote yourself as super junior, just be somewhat ambiguously in the middle - like integrated media planner - or whatever.

You don’t need to get in at an agency to learn the digital stuff. If you did, you’d likely get grunt work, little oversight, and be treated badly because: age. Fast track: pick something you care about and build digital campaigns for it. In 6 weeks you’ll be interviewable. In 6 months, senior positions will be attainable and more of your old skills will transfer.

I am finding it’s hard to get junior roles when you have “director” on your resume. Also for freelance they want people who already have the skills. For me, I am trying to build skills to switch industries ultimately. I am not giving up, but this is what I’ve seen so far.

I understand. stress it’s not a $ thing & you should have a chance. I was Sr level as staff and adjusted my “freelance “ title to just read ‘producer’ — the Sr was starting too many interview calls with money concerns. Also can say it’s for work /life balance or trying new things that u want the challenge - no one will fault u for wanting to learn.

The approach of doing proactive digital work to boost your portfolio is solid advice. However, reach out to people you know in digital to review your work and make sure your thinking, problem solving, and execution are trending with today’s standards. Digital has a lot of moving parts and you will need to anticipate the effects of user interaction as they apply to pages beyond the one you are designing for.

What is the best message when informing the rest of your company that someone was terminated? The backstory is that this employees performance has been struggling, he was put on a PIP, and in recent convos, he’s said that his role isn’t for him. As he is getting terminated due to performance, it feels more amicable now that he knows it’s not working and that he needs to find a new job. Thoughts on message to the rest of the company?

At what point do you know that it’s time to leave a new position? I have always excelled in my previous jobs and left a cushy position for this agency. But since day one, I have been struggling to adjust. I started not long after lockdown began in my city, and am starting to regret taking this new job. I’m a 40-hr/week temp who wants to stay that way rather than moving to full time status. My employment agreement has a date that our engagement is “expected to end,” but it says that it may be extended. It’s at will and can be terminated by either party at any time. The way things go here, the client, the hours: I want to keep my nice little 8 hour bubble with overtime. So when the time comes, can I reject any FT offer and force them to continue as is or terminate?
