KE and Latham are surprisingly very similar.
LW requires being very responsive at all times
I think this is a person/group thing. I’m at a V40, and some groups don’t even respond to client requests, they just send them completed work product. Other groups require me to reply within 10 minutes. Been chewed out for not responding to an email for an hour that was sent at non peak times for non urgent things. Some people just make this their life and tie their worth to it I think

See but the thing is, you are supposed to be that responsive AND everything is supposed to be complete and correct. And yes, it’s insane.
What’s the responsiveness culture? I’ve only known my firm and our “rule” is every midlevel or junior should respond to emails within ten minutes.
I mean, what’s the expectation?
A9 and A12 have never woken up to a partner chewing them out for not responding to a 4 am email within 15 minutes, and it shows.
I had a partner call his paralegal at 2am regarding a non-urgent matter. She said she answered, listened, and responded that there was no employee benefits emergency, ever, that couldn’t wait until the next morning. Then she hung up on him. Granted, this wasn’t V10 and was almost 30 years ago, but he remained loyal to her and took her with him when he left for another firm.
Another partner at a different, bigger firm was insisting that her secretary come in to work on Easter Sunday to type something for her. A 2nd year associate looked her square in the face and told her that she was being ridiculous, it wasn’t urgent, and she was NOT going to make Laura leave her family event to do it. That partner had previously been, and was subsequently, the managing partner of the firm - a 200+ attorney firm. The associate is still there, and is now a partner.
I’m not saying everyone can get away with this, but partners can, and have, backed down when faced with the ridiculousness of their behavior. It all depends on how worried you are about your job, I guess - and how much you accept.
Kirkland is a V1, thank you.
But in all seriousness, I have heard it varies by group… I wish I was in one of the chill groups. 😢
So if they are a V1, they would also be a V10… lol
It varies group to group in my office (and appears to also vary a lot between offices)
What group at KE did you lateral into

LW is not as responsive as my previous white shoe firm tbh idk where this commentary is coming from.

Yes if you want to survive long term but honestly seen people coasting and not working weekends generally and stayed on for years
I disagree that KE and LW are very similar having worked at both at least not culture wise generally but responsiveness yeah
It varies a lot. I was an associate at a v10 and am a partner at one of the SV flagship firms now. Responsiveness expectations are wildly different
How is being responsive at the expense of being complete/correct? A simple “will do” or “on it” is not incorrect at all…
Exactly A12, like just acknowledge the email, it’s not that hard and every firm expects that, it’s not specific to V10
Yes. I’m a specialist at a V10. Sometimes M&A teams send me fire drill on Friday noon and ask for risk assessment or agreement markup within 2 hours. Like, the deal started three weeks ago and we weren’t involved until now. Client realized they didn’t include our area during diligence and now would like a last minute sign off. More fun if M&A team is based in EU and generally doesn’t care about time difference or quality of work product
You meet the deadline only to see on the following Wednesday that the markup / issues list was sent to the client
