If it seems easy and repetitive to you, that's exactly when you should push it down. The task will likely seem more complicated to an intern and they gain experience just by seeing new workpapers, etc.
Thank you. Yes it’s very easy and repetitive and I rather focus on the bigger picture than doing these simple task (at least what I consider simple).
How my group works is the associate/intern sets up the workpapers and then the senior and manager will reviews them. Atleast after they get the senior review we send them to our team in India to prepare the workpapers. At that point the associate reviews and makes/ask the India team to update. Then the senior does the same thing, then the manager.
It goes through multiple levels of reviews. If your a small firm you likely don’t have an outsourced team, so I think it is totally fair for the associate/intern to help with the workpapers/return prep. I think the biggest issue is the intern likely doesn’t know much about the system so maybe it would take to much time and it is better for them to help do a review of the returns to get familiar with the system.
I like to use staff/interns to prep and seniors to review. It is great for interns to spend time on workpapers and if you (as a staff) work with them to set them properly, read through instructions, etc., it helps upper management understand if you’re ready to step into the more senior role of solely review.
I don’t want to sound mean, but as a staff, you still have to go through the daily grind. If you’re not there to prepare, who else is? If you’re just thinking interns, they don’t know enough yet.
I see. I didn’t think about budgets since I’m not involved in billing. 🧐🤦🏽♀️
That could be the main reason too.
Cont. I can’t be the reviewer since managers want me to prep the return and they stay on as reviewers.
I didn’t think of this. I will suggest this. Thank you for your input.
I don’t see the issue. The interns need to learn how to do the easy stuff first before working on the hard stuff aka the tax return.
