Everyday at Circle Time we do a “mindful moment” with a different breathing strategy. The kids love it! It also helps me give them a specific strategy when they are escalating
Which one works best for you?
I have had a couple of counselors come in to my AP European History class to teach the students how to relax. They are so worried about grades and exams they can’t even focus sometimes. They were shown the app “Calm” (which I love) and taught breathing techniques to relieve stress. There were several other methods taught, it was really helpful. So at least once a week I try to remind them of these techniques and put some relaxing music on while they work in class
I begin each morning with a mindfulness activity/breathing activity. I guide the children through a body scan after the activity. It takes 10-15 minutes. After recess I use one of my apps (Calm, Insight Timer) for the children to have a quick calm down and refocus. I also stress how we always have our breath and how we can use it to help us in many ways and to use it to help them in their lives. It’s wonderful when I see someone practicing without my guidance and not at our scheduled times. They truly embrace it. ❤️
I taught yoga once a week in my dance class. Now that I’m back to ELA I try to think about breath work and also having the students think about gratitude. I taught yoga after school and my principal cane more than the students lol. I highly recommend Yoga Foster for support here
I taught 5th and 6th grade some basic Mindfulness last year. I see students once a week for 1/2 a year. I still feel a little like a newbie in this area. what helped you become more comfortable?
