Depends on where you want to go. My wife and I are the adventurous type, so we honeymooned in Kenya. We also did an all-points vacation to India with SPG which was really cool. SPG points will book you some crazy nice hotels for cheap. We stayed in the top floor of the Westin in Mumbai (complete with a shared butler) for 6k points/night. Compare that to the 21k points we spent for a night in Paris...
Don't get tied to using points. You'll do it for every other vacation in the future, just like all the ones you've taken so far. The honeymoon doesn't need to be the nicest or best vacation ever (we would have been sad at the thought we'd never be able to afford better!), but it should be unique and special for you. Take off the restraints of where there's an SPG / Marriott / United combo and figure out what type of vacation you truly want. If you can use points, great. If you can't, you'll use them later
Maui. We did two weeks entirely on points. United flights from boston and stayed at the Marriott wailea. It was amazing and allowed us to spend our money on great food and activities.
St Regis in Mauritius is the best I've found (much better than pr or punta minta)
My wife and I did this for our 1 year anniversary:
Convert Amex points to British airways avios and book flights to Nice, France (thru Heathrow) and we stayed at the Monaco Marriott and another Marriott just west of nice that was 3 blocks from the beach in Juan les pins.
Doesn't answer your spg or united points.
You know what, I owe an apology: our Kenya trip wasn't points-based. It was super cheap though, and we flew air emirates round trip (which was awesome.)
We booked a package through gate 1 travel that had us fly into Nairobi, then travel to, and stay in, several animal sanctuaries (which was incredible), then several nights at a resort in the Maasai Mara national reserve where we went on photo safaris. Then back to Nairobi, flew to Dubai for 2 days, and then back home. Whole thing was really cheap, considering it was a 10-day vacation. All flights were air emirates, which was awesome.
Our India trip was all points and it gave me a newfound respect for how SPG treats their customers.
Tagging on what OW1 said, it's going to be tough to hit all your points vendors in a single trip, regardless of how hard you try.
St Regis in Punta Mita -- you won't regret it
^^ badass. I would be down but my wife is way too cautious. How were the flights to Kenya?
Maybe the Sheraton in Rio (there are two) and then the Sheraton in Igauzu Falls, Brazil
Btw, I've stayed at the Sheraton Rio Leblon hotel a few times. The view is great. Been to Iguazu, but stayed elsewhere to save money. Love Brazil!
Did maui for a week..flight hotel..all points
Bora Bora all the way. Starwood has properties. Get an overwater bungalow.
Maldives
Wife and I did 1st class roundtrip to Portugal on Lufthansa via Frankfurt. Stayed at the Sheraton in Lisbon and the Luxury Collection hotel in Agarve. Did one night in Frankfurt on the way back to explore the city and have ample time at the First Class Terminal for the return flight.
Other good spots to burn United miles on partners are Joburg and Tokyo. There are ample SPG and Marriott properties!
