How long in criminal and what side?
3 years, defense.
I have the same background. 3 years crim def. Easy transition to plaintiff PI. You can easily get a job in a pre-lit department. I don’t know Bay Area firms, but look for PI firms in your area on linkedin hiring pre-lit attorneys. Once you can pre-lit experience, you can try to transition into handling some lit. But there’s a lot to learn on the pre-lit side first.
You’re gonna do great assuming you have some trial experience! I know some former public defenders who started a PI firm, and they haven’t been afraid to take shit to trial when they didn’t get good offers, and now they’re millionaires with their pictures on billboards.
