Ask yourself what you want to do after banking - the switch is only worth it if you’re dead set on being a career banker or exiting to PE/VC. If you just want to do strategy/Corp dev, stay at Big 4 - it’s not a hard switch if you’re in a strategy or M&A focused role already
Will you pleaser provide some details on how you began the transition, any skills you developed specifically for IB, etc?
Yeah I made that switch. You can still make time for life outside of work, but just be prepared to cancel plans quite a bit. But the worst part of the switch is that you go from a non-entry level role to being treated like a first year again. Really think why you want to do this.
Yeah I realize I’m essentially starting as an analyst 1 but I don’t mind, it’s only going to be tougher making the switch the longer I stay in consulting, and I think the IB experience serves as a better platform at the Analyst level than the associate. But just my assessment of it
(Cont) A little daunting. I know what I’m signing up for, and that sweatshop hours are dependent on the bank and group itself. Can’t be that bad right?
Network, network, network. Then, when you think you’ve reached out to everyone you can, keep networking
Knowing how to model specific to what your group does. If it’s an m&a group then the standard 3 statement with dcf and merger model should be enough. If it’s lev fin usually LBO emphasis. Know your technicals inside and out, unless ur coming from a valuation group at big 4 u will be grilled heavily on accounting questions
And thanks IB1. It could also have been the group I specifically met too, the analysts looked like zombies who were miserable. I really want to get the experience and think it’ll serve me well down the line but it’s tougher to make the switch when I actually enjoy my time here at big 4
