Honestly, Marriott in the USA is garbage. You get great upgrades and service in Asia and Europe.
You’re at the mercy of the front desk’s whims. I am titanium and have been for as long as I remember —- barely every get upgraded unless I ask.
Yeah and if you have any requests like feather free room they use that as an excuse not to upgrade you. Really disappointed since the transition from SPG.
I don't think the guarantee is for the best room available but that they can offer an upgrade if available. Feel like the of available has become heavily asterisked
What I found is there are a lot of untrained or careless hotel staff. I typically have to remind them of my Plat status and ask for upgrades. I’ve been told many times the hotel is sold out, then given an upgrade.

Always be nice to the front desk folks. They control your upgrades.

Yah I have, it really depends on room availability, and tier - you are not guaranteed the best room available, you are guaranteed an upgrade (which is typically 1-tier higher than the standard room) and at higher tiers a suite if available - no higher than that.

It doesn’t say anywhere you’re guaranteed the best room. Just that you get an “upgrade” when space is available.
“Platinum Elite Members and above receive a complimentary upgrade to the best available room, subject to availability on the day of arrival, for the entire length of stay. Complimentary upgrade includes suites, rooms with desirable views, rooms on high floors, corner rooms, rooms with special amenities or rooms on Executive Floors”
So are we just defining “available” differently now? I would assume if something is available for booking for the same nights as your stay upon checkin, it should be available right?

How long is your stay? If they only have the top room available for part of your stay they won't give it to you.
I've been Black level, Platinum and now Titanium for over 30 years.
Each hotel makes their own definition of what a “specialty suite” is & some are definitely more generous than others. Any specialty suites aren’t available for complimentary upgrades even at the Ambassador tier (although again it is at the discretion of the hotel)
