My boss told me I’m doing great work, but said remote agents aren’t eligible for promotions. I’m remote and work in a different state than the HQ. She said since I’m not as visible to senior leaders, she’s afraid they won’t make an exception. I need more money, but love my remote set up. I don’t see very many remote jobs. The ones I’ve applied to haven’t responded.

Anyway - question is: those negotiating their salary in the same job/position - did your popularity help give you that raise?

That is BS according to me. For me I have always told myself if you don't appreciate me then another company will . Start looking somewhere else.

How are you?

I think it’s really odd that you work remote but that precludes you from a promotion. For me I think promotions have always been skills based and I’m not sure how being remote or not would change that at all

like

Exactly my thought too. I’ve been remote for over 10 years with the same company. I’ve moved to different roles. But, they were parallel moves. Not higher up the ladder. But the company is just now making it known because they’re capping everyone into the office 4 days a week. I’m in a diff state, so going in doesn’t apply to me.

like

Remote work alone shouldn’t hinder promotion. However all promotions require visibility imo, it’s not just skill. If the decision makers don’t know what you are capable of or what you want you will be overlooked. You still need to network when remote.

like

True. The senior leaders know me. But the work I was put on doesn’t give visibility. It’s more back end, working directly with our vendors. I always felt it was my performance review and what my direct leader presented to the higher ups in writing. Not me sharing everything I did through presentations or whatnot.

Ummmmm???? Is that in writing somewhere that all remote employees can see? Seems like playing favorites to those that work on-site. Seems sketchy to me.

For me though promotions always come through my hard work.

I guess a question I might be asking is how is your manager talking about you when you're not in the room? Is your manager also acting nonchalant about you and other remote employees and caters to those who are on site seems like a lot of favoritism being played Are you really sure you want to be with this company? Sure remote work is great, but have you considered maybe a hybrid option those are great too and then gives you that little bit of visibility. I understand it may not be an option for your current position or company but there are plenty of hybrid roles out there. Something to consider 🤷‍♀️

like

"Playing favorites"? Or at the higher level you need to be in the office?

If im been honest it sounds like you been work for a company that dont see the value you been adding to the work place online, it also sounds like they might feel that because you work from home it not the same level of work effort, so yes looking around to find a better remote job, you have the skill with a computer so you should find something soon.

I think you’re right. Even though a lot of people have said it’s as if I’m working right in the workplace. Thanks

As her to walk you through the criteria they generally use to promote someone. They generally have a few qualifications, including reaching the outcomes they set or meeting goals etc. Draft a report on how you have met each one of the goals set up for your role, and also how you have been delivering consistent results. Use this to make your case and request a description of the criteria for promotions. Then ask for your case to be brought up to leadership. Her excuses are just that, excuses.

like

How are you?

I'm not sure if it was popularity, but I do think that overall performance is what led to my latest raise. It seems strange that they would allow you to work remotely though but not allow you to advance in your remote position. Kind of leaves you in a bind. Seems like you have to weigh how much you care about remote vs. earning more money. Remote is worth a lower salary for me personally

like

Thanks for your input.

Popularity helps. But productivity is key. What are your work metrics in comparison to your peers?

like

How are you doing?

Ask her to show you that in the policies and your new hire paperwork. Also, just forward to HR and ask if this is even real! WTF

like

Can we be friends?

It’s not as much about popularity as it is visibility, but you can gain that remotely with effective personal branding. Exceptions are made when the perceived value of their current asset exceeds the perceived value any other person could potentially present. You have to let them know what they would lose if you moved on.

This would also help you get more interview invitations from jobs to which you apply and recruiters searching LinkedIn.

like

Can we be friends?

Short answer, yes. Years ago I was in a field office and had to transfer to the main office before I was able to get a promotion. Visibility and networking is actually important. It's the same in remote work.

Currently I work for a small company that does the construction of small cell utility poles and roof top sites for the major cell carriers like VZW, T-mobile, AT&T and so on. I am a project coordinator but I do everything under the sun. Created project tracker. Submitti bids, sourcing material, negotiating price on materials, handling post construction inspections, scheduling sub contractors, notifying stakeholders, coordinating with construction managers - property owners - building management.

I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!

Hey fishes, recently got an offer of 245k plus a bonus, but no specificity and at least 3% cost of living annual raise. My current job I make 150k plus a 20% bonus and an annual cost of living raise anywhere from 2-3.5%. Have been in my current position about a year. Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!
