Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Sorry for his loss. However, laid off means he will receive unemployment for quite sometime. He could actually look for work in meantime or find a tenant to sublet the apartment to.
He isn’t on the hook to pay - all evictions and late fees suspended through late August for just this reason. There may be additional assistance that he may qualify for.
The Met Council has a lot of good resources:

Just to clarify- not on the hook at the moment. All rent will continue to be owed unless he qualifies for one of the special programs or NY State takes additional actions.
Sorry about the situation. That’s gotta be difficult. He should have a heart to heart with the landlord. End of the day it depends on if the landlord will be sympathetic. He could offer to help find a new tenant to take his lease. Or see if he could negotiate a “buy out” price, basically he can offer some amount up front to be relieved of the remainder of the lease

Thanks very much for your time everyone. I should have added- he has the clause in his lease that makes him liable to pay till the end of the lease agreement even if he moves out. I’m suggesting he contact management company ( who are not responsive at all) and not pay July to get their attention and still be protected by the tenant laws in place right now.
I was in the same situation with that clause (different city though), but my company was flexible and let me terminate the lease early without a fee. I just had to keep paying rent until they found a replacement, which was better than the alternative. Worth asking and working something out!
The landlord will not budge. Don’t expect anything to go in your favor in that regard. Your BF needs to put a sublease listing on Craigslist immediately.
Find a subletter/someone else to take over the lease
