My company announced a mandatory 4-day-a-week RTO policy, claiming it’s for spontaneous collaboration, but I’ve never been less productive. I spend half my day commuting and the other half wearing noise-canceling headphones because the open-office plan is a literal nightmare for deep work. I’m considering quitting without a backup plan because my mental health is tanking, but the job market looks terrifying right now. Would you risk unemployment to save your remote lifestyle, or should I just suck it up?

Unemployment benefits are NOT available if you voluntarily quit. You have to be fired/laid off due to no fault of your own. Even then, there are certain parameters within a range of activities that may cause a claim to be denied. Quitting bcuz you don’t like the job anymore, isn’t usually covered. Now, “local” may play a part , as these are “State-Based” benefits.
I’d recommend, tough it out, and look for other work. Remember though, the “grass” isn’t always greener somewhere else. Good Luck, you’re Tougher Than You Think.

Spontaneous collaboration hahaha that’s so silly. Completely agree, I go in five days and my best days are when I don’t speak to a single person tbh.

like

Same exact thing happened where I work, moral is low, everyone pissed off, we cannot get any work done being interrupted every 5 minutes, so hard to focus. Upper comes in late or not at all. Some people are exempt if they moved away during pandemic. It’s either too noisy or dead silent which feels like I should just be at home. I was good with 2 or even 3, they kept increasing it. But 4 is just ridiculous. We didn’t get bonuses this year but I have to spend more money on clothes, food, gas. Work-life balance sucks now. Wish I could quit so bad.

I wouldn't risk unemployment right now, but I'd definitely be updating my resume and start looking. Try to negotiate with your company to see if you can work something out. If not, start silently, but aggressively applying. Once you land an offer somewhere else, then quit.

Unless you're in a position where you don't have to make any payments, or you have enough money stacked up for 1-2 years, keep the job for now.

Don't resign yet. Flip the script and use malicious compliance.
If you are less productive in the office, then just be less productive. Take breaks. Speak to your colleagues as much as possible. Set up meetings.

like

Even though that really sucks, it's happening a lot. I would advise you to stay where you are until you find another job. I've been unemployed for a year but will finally be starting a new job soon. The job market is the Absolute Worst! Put your resume out there and apply for jobs while you have a job.

Spontaneous interaction 4 days a week would probably give me a spontaneous heart attack in less than 1

I’m in the same boat right now and actually managed to get accommodations from my company to work from home. That being said, I’ve also been applying for a new position for over a year now, I personally wouldn’t risk quitting without a backup in this current market.

It's really frustrating. I get the most work done in my home office because I don't have to worry about the 20 other people on meetings in the cubicles around me. The amount of times ive been on teams meetings with mostly people in the same room as me just in other cubicles is... hilarious and frustrating.

like

Right?! In the same boat where we're in the office 4 days instead of 3. The office has also just moved location and is now more inconvenient for the entire team to commute to. I don't understand the whole collab thing when most of us have headphones in 99% of the day. There's zero benefit to more time in the office, but hey - we don't make the rules!

Young people- remote working is likely a fad. Most people have had office jobs with demanding schedules and hard work for decades. Right now the market is weak for office staff, and you are unlikely to beat out candidates when you tell them you quit your last job for mental health. Unless you can find a company run by people who value remote workers and trust them, expect that this is the norm and you're going to have to deal with being able to focus in a noisy environment and be able to function in an office. Sometimes, desired reality is not real world and you just need to adapt or fail. Those who adapt to changing environments are the most likely to succeed long-term. The only thing constant in life is change.

like

Definitely don't share why you quit your last job. Just say it was time for new challenges.

Hey.
1. You have a job
2. You get paid (hopefully)
3. Feel blessed you are on 4 days a week. Enjoy your 3 days off! Life is short!
4. Work on your mental health on your days off...

like

Companies ask you to come in. Not for collaboration. Not for productivity. It’s for two reasons. 1. They don’t trust you and 2. Execs at companies are like toddlers and there is no reason for their existence if they don’t have someone to physically watch all day.

The market is really tough at the moment, but I try to prioritize myself first. Is this change really impacting how you feel day to day or is it just an inconvenience? Unless its major, maybe start looking for a new role

I think it depends on the role. I have friends who are on campaigns, Partner, PR, and strategy who all got jobs within 6 weeks of being laid off. Content, digital and ops are taking longer. So it will depend on your tolerance and savings.

is not worth compromising your own health and mental state

For any real estate investors

22 years old and currently focused on using my left over income to invest and pay off my debt. I am set to pay off my college loans by next year and, when I do, I want to look into investing into real estate. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get into/learn more about real estate investing? Or how I can have enough knowledge on the topic to be able to invest wisely when the time comes?

Any books? youtubers? etc. How did you all learn about it?

Three job interviews with a company, last one creating a marketing plan and presenting to marketing VP. I received good feedback from him. Three days later recruiter wants to give me a call and “give an update”. Schedules it after 2 days. This morning cancels last minute as they are having “internal discussions”. I’m really annoyed and tired. Thoughts?

Has anyone ever posted a general marketing position? We have an open position on our marketing team but we are unsure what type of position to offer. We have a wide variety of needs but don’t necessarily need to have this future person have all these skills. For example we need someone with great copywriting skills and also need someone who is great at digital marketing. This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.

Ads seems the easiest, but even then there's time and overheads... I've been looking for a reliable model.
