Faced this weird behaviour from Optum recently. Gave interview for Data Scientist position. HR said feedback is positive. Asked for documents. It's been month now since I have shared the documents. I have no update on the offer. Today I called HR, she called me back saying the position is on hold due to recalibration in team, She has shared interview feedbacks to other teams and will get back to me in couple of days. I am clueless now. My last working day is approaching (In a month). Any Help??

Do you need the money? My pride would tell me to walk away and make a clean break. But my bills would probably have me considering it. Ultimately I think it depends on where you're at and what you need right now financially.
Do both. Gain an understanding of what they need and expect from a consultant and charge a fair price. Do the best work ever and increase your stock. Ask for a referral to consult elsewhere or seek out thier competition and repeat. All the best. You will succeed.
It all depends on the consulting rate they are wiling to pay and how this impacts the terms of your severance. Personally, I would agree with A1 and feel offended that I was not essential enough to be kept on post layoff and hesitant on the nature of the consulting work (sounds like clean up).
Of course, a lot of things to consider in your decision. However, if I were you, I would propose to them that they keep you on part-time with your benefits because if you have 401(k) and other things in place, you’ll be able to keep that while looking for other work and you won’t be too much impacted other than of course, making less money but you’ll still have your benefits in place(OK, healthcare, vision, care, life, insurance, etc. )
Just be sure they pay you hourly n a higher rate than you were getting as there aren’t benefits, paid sick days, etc. Good luck!

What do they mean by "a few hours on the side"? Just because you are doing consulting work on the side does not mean you are not able to look for and land a new job.
With being a consultant, you are no longer their employee but an independent contractor.
You need to weigh the pros and cons really seriously as well as your financial situation.
Whether you choose to be a consultant or not, per their payroll you are no longer employed with them.
As being an independent contractor, you are on more shaky ground as you could be there today and gone tomorrow with little to no warning.
I honestly, would take as much time as you can now to be applying for a new job since you have a couple weeks' notice especially since it supposedly is easier to find a job when you have a job.

@DE1, you are 100% correct which an employee is not as scrutinized by the IRS as a contractor or independent contractor.
No you should take the freelance opportunity but tell them you want like double what you make now. It is rough looking for a job right now take what you can get!!! Make them pay. Do not settle for what your salary is now just hourly up it min 40%

I’ve heard this happening many times. If you’re a consultant, you could operate as an LLC and ask for higher rates. Just think about it, they wouldn’t be paying for healthcare and benefits for you so that needs to be made up somehow.

I think if you are asked to be a Consultant that is a great honor. You would then have to weigh whether you would make more consulting or with unemployment. Unfortunately it isn't easy getting a job right now so you may be waiting quite awhile.
