I have a possible opportunity at Protiviti. Coming from big4 and wondering if Protiviti has fairly similar perks. I’ve read the 2022 benefits guide and it gave a oddly low PTO count of 16 days. Is this true and what about a holiday disconnect in the December time period? Are there any other hidden perks that are awesome? Already heard WLB is better and the culture, but I feel like I’ve gotta find that out first hand. Protiviti

It's an HR strategy to avoid paying out unused time off, while making you feel guilty anytime you're not working, and disguise it as "a perk"
Best response to the system I saw was a CISO that decided one week every month during ski season was required for skiing. He encouraged his team to coordinate their time off so stuff was covered, but everyone on the team ended up with like 8 weeks off that year.
Stop the guilt, look up average PTO for your industry, book it appropriately ahead of time and take it. If you're in consulting, I wouldnt hesitate taking 3-4 weeks a year on top of company holidays. You work hard enough. This is a corporate tool to reduce liability of paying out earned vacation upon departure.
Abuse would be, 3+ months off, one day each week off, something that unfairly burdens your team... otherwise recognize its a work hard play hard field and take the Vaca.
The first part of your question is valid, but ask yourself do you really think the company is giving this as a perk? it’s all about unused vacation payout
There have been studies that people take less because the days aren’t earned or “yours”. With a finite number, people feel entitled to those days off. Companies knew what they were doing with “unlimited” PTO. If it were me I would probably take the same number of days as old system (though I never end up taking full allotment due to work by a couple of days).
I worked for a similar company in the past. My personal approach was to take 3 days each month and plan a 2-3 week off vacation during the summer. Do not feel bad about taking time off. It’s part of your compensation package and don’t worry about how HR or management feels, the company offers you this perk and you should unapologetically take advantage of it.
Yeah my advice is plan out the PTO in advance and let your bosses know so that it’s more of a tell then an ask
It’s all based on your utilization. As long as you can hit that or ideally surpass it a bit, then don’t feel guilty taking the rest as PTO. But if you don’t hit your goals, then it prevents you from taking PTO.
Same boat as you
I get 25 days a year due to how long I’ve been at my company. I’d say for you start at 20 add a day for every year you been there. Cap it off at before 30 so maybe 28 or 29
In consulting, if you hit whatever your metrics are (utilization, billing, etc) take all the time off you can to still hit your goals.
If you can take 2 months and still hit your target utilization, go for it. If you’re in a promotion year and want to pad your numbers (and can get staffed), maybe delay that trip.
Take what you need when you need it and balance that with your expectations for bonus and promo.
I learned unlimited PTO was a hoax when I was told that “most people use 4 weeks” for maternity leave. Legally, I should have been allowed to take as long as I wanted for maternity leave…they always have “suggestions” on max time off to make you feel bad.
Unlimited PTO has the word unlimited in it.
