My family is up in the air on where we are living after October due to my husband job. I work for a top 10 firm and fully work remote. We may be living in another state. Should this be brought up with my employer? How does one go about it since everything is still not clear.

You have to bring it up for the firm to comply with tax laws

like

If you are fully remote, only bring it up after you move. You will need to let your company know which state you are in for tax purposes.

like

they may adjust your salary too based on cost.

like

Do you have a signed contractual agreement to remain fully remote or could you be asked to return to office in the future?

Does your company have offices in the locations you're looking at?

Does your company tag the new locations as a different cost of living payband? Ie, if you're in a LCOL and move to a HCOL, they may have issues. If you're in a MCOL and move to a LCOL, you may either have your salary reduced or not eligible for raises for a bit while your salary normalizes to what they pay for that geography.

like

You should absolutely let them know before you move. Speak with HR first . Ask what the process is and follow the process.

like

If you’re a CPA, check to see if your firm has a requirement that you be licensed in the new location.

like

You should let them know before you move and make sure that you are moving to a state that they already have employees in

like

Once you know for sure you are going to move and where to you will need to have the conversation.

Just because you are remote doesn’t mean they will still allow it unless they already have people working in the state.

Remember- they have state tax filings and obligations as well. So if you are moving to a state where they do not currently have anyone, you will cause them to have to go through the process which they may or may not wish to do.

If you are a high performer, it’s likely not an issue. But it is something to keep in mind.

You are in tax. Arent there tax impacts? If so you have an obligation to notify your employer to ensure tax is WH and paid appropriately.

Thank you all!

The tax w/h is very simple in the time entry so putting it down is not a problem. The firm has resources to do so.

I just wasn’t sure if/when discussions should arise since it’s up in the air.

Thanks! I guess since it’s still up in the air I’ll have to let them know closer to October and see how it goes from there.

There will be no offices to where I’m moving to; but there are other people who work remote in different states that are not near an office

Are there other employees in that state? If not, they will need to get set up as an entity in that state which could cause issues that may not be quick to resolve.

If I were you, I would inquire about the policies for moving so you know. It is not as simple as it may seem. If they are not set up as an entity in that state, they will have payroll issues. If you move without telling them, you will be at fault, not them.

Making a lot of money relative to the average but feeling poor? Median after-tax income was ~$55,000 in 1981 and was ~$73,000 in 2020. Using a Bank of Canada inflation calculator $55,000 in 1981 is equivalent to ~$165,000 today, which would put someone in the top 10% of earners today. But in 1981 the median family had that extra money. Who can I blame?

Why do Big 4 firms interview you for a specific position level and then try to make you come in below that level...

That would be a lateral move for me in terms of level which be okay if at least it was a good pay increase but Their quoted pay range for the lower level would make it almost a lateral move financially too..
