My firm is asking me to take the bar in a different state and then begin taking on clients in that state. I think I deserve a pay bump having to handle clients from two different states and getting up to speed with the laws of the new state. I would be the only lawyer at the firm barred in the new state. What type of pay bump should I request? Salary increase? Decent portion of the fees generated? Hybrid ask? I handle plaintiffs PI, btw.

Don’t ask for anything until after you pass the bar and are admitted in the new state. Then you will have some leverage.

What state are you in? And how big of a firm? And where are they asking you to get licensed?

Are they paying you extra to do that or are you doing during your normal office hours? Are they paying you for your study time and when you’re taking the bar ?

In CA. Taking Nevada Bar. Still working full time, so studying on weekends and after work - not the best of times. Not paying for my bar studying time, just the cost of taking the bar.

I’m also taking the bar in another state in contemplation of moving. I would ask for coverage of your bar study program of choice. BarBri is not cheep.

At the minimum, they should pay all the costs of taking the bar (fees, test prep, books,...) and give you some time off to study. When I did it, I took off the week before the test, so I could really focus and do the last minute cramming that's necessary to pass. As to whether this entitled you to more money is dependent on a lot of factors... Did you take the job with the expectation that you'd be required to take the Nevada bar? Does the firm actually have a book of Nevada business? When will your Nevada skill set actually start generating money for the firm? I agree that there isn't much to talk about until you pass but, assuming you do, whether this ends up being a meaningful expansion of your job responsibilities isn't clear. If you already have a full caseload and now will be expected to service a Nevada caseload as well that's clearly something they should be paying you extra for but if you'll only be handling a couple of cases, I'm not sure that's cause for a raise.
