He's not obligated to help him. If patient safety is at stake, then if it was me I would be more inclined to help him. But if there are no patient or compliance risks, then there is no need. Your friend did as he was told and transferred the task over. He left with integrity and the proper way.

thats how I feel about it as well
Depends on the severance package wording. Consult a lawyer if in doubt.

The severance package only included standard verbiage and not anything that alluded to a situation like this
There are severance packages out there that can include consulting or transition support clauses, would recommend reading through them again to see. If there is nothing like that, I don’t think there is any obligation to respond. Ironic how that happens, though.

seems bizarre to expect someone to respond when they are no longer with the company
Unless there's some contractual obligation, your friend is under no obligation to respond. And, if he responds, he can submit a bid for doing the job. What he shouldn't do is just bail them out for free, that's not how it works. If they hire him back and give him a nice raise, that's a different story.

haha that would be something if they hire him back

It sounds like a tricky situation! Unless there's something in the contract or severance package stating he needs to help out post-departure, your friend isn't obligated to respond. He’s done his part by providing instructions.

exactly! agree
