My wife is a teacher, salaries for teachers are public information. Whatever school district your GF is going to work in should have salary information on their website.
Being a public school teacher is definitely not a lucrative career. Starting salaries are low (can be as low as the 30s, some places are in the 50s), and annual raises are pretty structured and minimal (3-5%). Being a government-funded career, combined with the numerous breaks from work that teachers get, are what keeps the salaries low.
I still think teachers deserve to make more regardless, but raising people’s taxes to pay for higher salaries isn’t going to fly in many places. Definitely unfortunate for teachers from a financial standpoint in my opinion.
M1 OK. Lol
My SO made $39k starting and by the end of her fifth year was at roughly $55k
My mom works in education in upstate New York so can’t say for NJ specifically - but she showed me the teacher salary progression chart a few weeks ago and 1st years out of college are starting at 53-54k in the fall. I’d imagine NJ would be the same or higher give the proximity to NYC and higher cost of living but I could be wrong. I know NY trends to have higher pay than most states but I would guess mid 50s. Teacher salaries for public schools should be public information so you could probably get an idea if you Google it.
Google "see through New York" and you can pull teacher salaries. Have her look at people she knows who recently started.
You can also search the site by district, and then sort from low to high - you'll need to scroll a bit to get past faculty and staff, but you should be able to see starting salaries.
I think they're in line with NYC Big4 starting salaries - high 50s / low 60s.
It does not take 30 years to make six figures in NY metro area. It takes more than Big4 for sure, but probably 10-12 years for a NYC / Westchester / Nassau teacher to make $100k..
For a 1st year teacher, she should expect to be started at around $55k, depending on where you are the benefits can be really nice. If she has a certain number of credits above her bachelor's, she may start out at a higher pay level.
Being a teacher can become fairly lucrative from a salary/benefits perspective after 10+ years but the ceiling for teachers levels off in the low 100s. That's why many teachers also do side gigs like tutoring or some also work at summer camps.
It should all be public info, just search for the school district open jobs and it should have a link to a pdf with all the salaries, and they’ll have the standard salary based on years
