I’m also at a downtown Chicago national firm. My advice - don’t risk the relationship if it’s not harming anyone, let him figure it out on his own from observing others. If he can’t figure it out, he probably won’t make it very long at your firm for other reasons.
Let him get some pay checks in his pocket. New jobs may require new wardrobes, but he may not have funds to go shopping yet. Also, nurture a relationship first, you know about books and their covers.
I think this guy is rad for bringing his authentic self to work - stop the stuffiness
Make a dress code memo, outline what is acceptable working attire. Pass it out for each employee to sign and give them a copy as reference. Place this memo in the kitchen wall for all to see.
Dress code allows it apparently so it's on RSM.
Employers have the right to establush the rules. Explain it to him once again and threaten to send him home and dock his pay next time he does it.
If you have clients coming in, it is important to maintain a professional work environment.
RSM did establish a rule apparently: dress for your day. So this person is doing nothing wrong.
Is this for real?? LOL
Yes
I think this is awesome, and would personally love to work with this guy 😂
Quite interesting which raises a few questions for me. How was this person dressed during the interviews? Was an employee handbook not given which usually lists the dress code? Why didn’t you pull the employee to the side and talk? You said this person is a new hire so maybe they are wearing what they have?
Are you allowing this staff’s attire distract you from the responsibilities given to him? Are you allowing you work colleagues to do the same to you, thereby making it a bigger deal that it is? In other words, you hired him to do a job - is he doing it? If so, as long as he doesn’t come in naked or with Daisy dukes on, then there really shouldn’t be an issue.
I worked at a business where the financial analyst would wear a t shirt with a v neck that she cut into it. She was smart, but had zero clothing sense.
Sweet. I like his style
Is there an official documented dress code? I would start there. Going from bibs to the jeans is an upgrade to some folks. That may be the way he interpreted the meeting.
Have HR talk to him about the proper dress code and point to the person on the policy. If they show up with something that is not appropriate, inform HR and let them handle it

I need updates OP!! What was this Cadillac of men wearing today ???
I would email the employee handbook . Type out the policy that is being violated and that this is a formal written warning. Include that the expectation is compliance of the dress code policy attached. Have them respond back acknowledging receipt with any questions so they can be addressed to prevent and conflicts or misunderstanding of the policy guideline.
This seems like an examplenof difference of opinion. Different people will interprete "business causal" in their own way. This person might have been raised in an environment where what they are wear truely meets their definition of the dress code.
While in might not meet the standard in the current environment, an open and upbfront conversation about the matter should put it to rest. I've found that most people want to do good work and are willing to comply with company standards, but they need to be educated on what those standards are to reach them.
