I’m also at a downtown Chicago national firm. My advice - don’t risk the relationship if it’s not harming anyone, let him figure it out on his own from observing others. If he can’t figure it out, he probably won’t make it very long at your firm for other reasons.
Let him get some pay checks in his pocket. New jobs may require new wardrobes, but he may not have funds to go shopping yet. Also, nurture a relationship first, you know about books and their covers.
I think this guy is rad for bringing his authentic self to work - stop the stuffiness
Worry less about clothes and more about your 47% audit deficiency rate down
Explain the dress code so there is no confusion. No idea what your dress code is and maybe they don’t either
I work in Dallas. Most days I’m in a button down, nice jeans and nice cowboy boots (lucchese). Things are just different in some places.
No tennis shoes though. Those aren’t allowed.
From the RSM website:
"Our culture celebrates the differences among our talented people, while enabling them to embrace full ownership of their work and personal lives."
So what's the problem, OP?
Bookkeeper/AE1 you are 💯.
i go in sweats and hoodies in Boston. No issue lol
But RSM clearly has higher professional standards than everyone else
Maybe he went to Clemson and this IS professional attire.
Lol wow! That’s quite the situation! It sounds like he is just expressing his style, but it’s definitely important to maintain a professional image at work. Maybe you could have a one-on-one chat with him to explain the dress code expectations more clearly? Sometimes a friendly approach works wonders. Good luck!
We are. It is bleak. AI 🤖 robots are running rampant throughout corporate america like packs of wild, rabid dogs. Oh, and it’s also the c-suite’s favorite tech fetish. So… back when I was in corporate life most CEOs had “MBA” degrees. Guess how many accounting course are in an MBA degree program - zero.
ZERO. So please, for the love of all that is good and holy, stop with the AI 🤖 bs, CEO/CIO/CFO types. It’s not a good fit.
Always remember, people grow up differently. Casual to you, might be business to them.
Give him a helping hand on how to dress.
Some people literally don’t know.
Talk to them. They just started, give them the benefit of the doubt of not knowing. It’s possible their parents did not have corporate jobs, or had jobs in the agriculture industry where jeans and nice boots were seen as dressed up. If you give them clear guidance and they blow it off that’s one thing. But if you choose to laugh at someone trying to find their place in an intimidating industry and not offer any help that’s shameful.
One day someone will call them out for it. And if they’ve been dressing this way for months and no one on their team told them when they knew it was wrong it will erode any trust and respect you have as a supervisor.
I agree with you!
Does it go against the WRITTEN dress code policy? If RSM is dumb enough not to define it, then it’s on RSM.
100% 🙌
But are they under budget? That’s the important question.
And meeting charge hour / utilization percentages? Then dress code be damned!!!
Just look at what Fetterman wears to the Senate and you’ll come down.
Okay, I have to ask... What did they wear to the interview to not see this coming? You/The Company might have gotten the bait and switch for once 🤣
He may just have the one suit, Sunday best, funeral, interview attire, until he can afford to purchase additional not necessary clothing. How many clients are you in the actual room with? Not over zoom or teams…
Does this person meet clients and or upper management? If not, what is the problem. He's and others will be dressing up for each other. How dumb! Yes I know, it's how things are done and if you dress professional you produce professional work. BS Who's he suppose to impress? I've never understood why everyone dresses up to impress each other if you're not a client facing employee. I would much rather be in jeans and a nice t-shirt and be comfortable doing my accounting work. There's absolutely no reason for everybody to dress up and look good for everybody else, and nobody else cares, except a busy bodies. Leave the guy alone! He's comfortable. If he's doing his job the way you want it done, leave the guy alone.
100% couldn't agree more, FCB2
Just give it to him straight.
Provide him the employee handbook on attire and tell him that his attire should reflect what the partners show.
If this is their first job, maybe he can’t afford to buy more professional clothes at this time. You could either suck it up, take him shopping on your dime, during office hours, or wait a month or two until he gets his bearings about him.
EY3 good for you, bud. Not everyone experienced the same first job in HS that you did. 👌
Is the dress code specified in the employee handbook? You should be thankful the employee wasn't wearing pajama bottoms - it's all the rage on college campuses.
Shouldn’t this be an HR issue if there is really a problem with how he is dressing?
What’s the harm? Try focusing on performance.
