My pay is 120K fully remote (I am 3 YOE.) I only have 5 days of sick days left from my total 17-day PTO (total 24 days if you count company-wide holidays of 7 days.) I need to reserve this 5 days for visiting family abroad. I keep wanting to leave this company because of low PTO days and I feel that my heart just left this company already. However I cannot seem to get a job offer from other companies and feeling burn out. How did you handle low PTOs if you experienced anything similar?

those 5 days are not supposed to be for PTO

like

yeah you literally said those were for sick days. 💡

I’m in NYC and this is what our paralegals make in BigLaw. This is very low by NYC standards comp wise. Are you in Idaho?

like

It’s low end for in house but honestly for only 3 YOE it’s not horrible especially in a LCOL area which OP confirmed.

Sick days should be separate from PTO days. At most companies you can’t use sick days for vacation. Are you saying you only have 12 days of actual PTO?

You could try talking to your manager and just asking if you could have a few bonus days. Sometimes a manager will just not care if you take an extra day that you don’t technically have. All depends really.

Another option is to just work remotely from abroad and kind of just work it so that you don’t have much to do on those days… that really depends on how heavily you are babysat and how busy you are. At jobs I’ve had if I just blocked off most of my calendar I could honestly get away with not doing anything all day unless something rarely urgent came up.

Have you had to change your start date after accepting an offer and how did it go? I told them I need to give 30 day notice and so I set my start date (incorrectly) assuming the background check and drug screen would take a few days to clear. However, the drug screen is now taking over a week and a half (still not finished, maybe tomorrow). Apparently things are much slower due to staffing issues and labs are backed up. It’s cutting into my 30 day notice significantly. Thoughts?
