My predecessor left my current company to start his own company and was kept on by my boss as a consultant, 1-5 hours a week. The startup failed last month.

A FT position just opened up on my team and my boss wants to bring him back to backfill the open position, perhaps as a one year contract term.

I've heard mixed reviews on his effectiveness previously and my team used to report into him. Dev loves him.

I'm nervous to have him on the team FT. Tips on how to approach this situation?

Doesn’t sound like you have a choice if your boss wants to bring him back. Bonus that the dev team loves him - use him effectively to get the things you want done

Yah…. I dunno….I wouldn’t be worried about it

Maybe I am just overthinking it as I am not fully secure in my self

Thanks PL1. Agree alignment with my boss will be critical.

Does your company have DISC assessments ? If they do I would dig deep into that and see how you can communicate effectively in order to see what needs to be seen in the time that he is there. Good luck!!

If your boss wants them back then I’d probably be in my bosses team until/unless proven there’s a reason to think otherwise.

I struggle w/ deep convos in social settings w/ partners. We have team dinners every few weeks that I go to, but find it tough to engage with them. Doing well on case, but feel it’s career limiting.

My partner is unstable, refuses to take their meds. Regularly snaps and lashes out at me. Im leaving and I feel compelled to tell HR for my replacement’s sake. Am I out of line?

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

What you should do when dealing with a very toxic worker that keep on sending passive aggressive messages to you as well as in group chat and email.
Things like when you answer his question he respond: I know that
Or when he keeps on saying my change requests were just minor in group meeting but actually not.
And keep on saying how hard he works when he clearly wasn’t and already underperformed compared to an intern level.

How to not let this toxic co-worker not poison me any further?

If you notice that a junior associate on your team has over-billed, how would you handle it? I don’t want to get them in trouble, but noticed that they billed extremely high numbers even though I was doing all they work on the deal and they completely disappeared other than for client conference calls. Certain things that they billed for on the final invoice, I alone handled and never asked them to do. Appreciate any advice. I’m a mid-level in case it helps for context.

Small firm (my boss, me, & a paralegal). After a hearing I did not handle, boss intended to seek review of the ruling in its entirety. What was communicated to me by paralegal was to seek review of a portion.

Seeking review is now time-barred. Boss is not upset, but this is 1 case & 1 problem. There are other cases & other stories.

How do I talk to my boss about being more present (boss is never in office, has “too many” emails, never answers his phone) without being seen as insubordinate?

I'm really struggling for how to respond. If I were not leaving it is absolutely a meeting I should be at. I don't want to respond with a lie. Any dvice on how to respond?

What can a junior associate do about a mid-level that constantly asks questions about things they were cc’d on, sends dozens of piecemeal emails and is generally just super high strung and needs everything right away?? No other mid-levels I’ve worked with act this way and this individual I’m working with is driving me insane and I’ve spent countless hours attaching emails and saying “as explained in the attached email…”

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.
