They are always there when you need them, but never hover when you don’t.
No micromanagement. Integrity. No passive agressive bs. Appreciates and fights for staff that provide value. My absolute favorite leader didn't do stupid and time-consuming performance reviews. He called me in one day, wrnt over the past year, had zero complaints, and gzve me a rsise 2x higher than the rest of the team. He also gave me a $5k bonus. The bonus was taxed up, so I got the entire 5k. Then told me to tske the rest of the day off.
They give you opportunity to perform at the next level, and give you credit in front of their superiors.
Transparency is the trait I’ve admired most about my best manager. Being a transparent leader makes them easier to trust and builds credibility.
Excellent listening skills, empathetic and fair.
• stand up for me on my behalf
• truly embody “no stupid questions” mentality
• ask questions like “do you want me to listen or do you want my advice?”
• source feedback from people often and share it with you so I can grow
• say “thank you” often
• show empathy
• take things off my plate when I’m working long hours or even tell me to take the day off when I’ve been working a ton
• engage in non-work conversation in an effort to get to know me outside of work
• keep their stress at bay to not stress out people around them
• don’t micromanage, but instead say things like “thanks for taking that on. I’m here if you have any questions or need to brainstorm.”
Oh and also say “good job” semi-often and give specific examples (i.e. “I was impressed with how you handled today’s call with XX client. Nice work.” Or “Loved these ideas. Great job thinking outside the box.”
