My recent college grad daughter who graduated last month with degree in Mass Communications is having EXTREMELY hard time finding a full time role even in an entry level position. She did multiple internships, held a job during college, and has amazing portfolio. She lives in a HUGE metro (DFW) and is open to remote as well. Any insight as to where else to search? She is applying everywhere possible!

The industry is in a horrible state right now and very few places are hiring. Those that are, have a ton of experienced people applying, even for junior roles.

Her best bet will likely be to either:
a.) Apply in Tier 1 locations, like NYC, without mentioning that she’s currently based somewhere else
b.) Leverage any connections she’s made at her previous employers
c.) Do one more internship at a big agency like Edelman or Weber, and hope that she gets hired into a full-time agency job from there

I wish I had a positive message to share, but I don't. She'll probably be in this position for awhile. It's a very bad time to be a new grad. Every industry is struggling and ours is no exception. She needs to take full advantage of any connections she might have through students, the uni, or internships.

Highly recommend her look for a graduate development program, apprenticeship or an internship, and be very clear on her intent to make it into a full-time role by the end of it. Lots of companies love to hire interns.

Ditto to the advice on internships/fellowships. It’s very hard to find an entry-level role in PR, especially in the current climate. When I graduated college, it was very hard to break into the PR industry and while I had a ton of great experience/internships in school, I interned at a big firm for six months before receiving an offer because it was based on the biz need & the agency only hired their interns for entry level roles.

Send resume directly to companies not just to posted jobs and reach out to their executives. Make sure she’s networking in person go to PR Marketing and Business events like Chambers of Commerce lots of executives attend these people hire people they know or who come recommended. Join LinkedIn PR and Marketing groups they frequently post job opportunities. Reach out to the schools career office for job postings and stay in touch with professors and classmates. Go through classmates LinkedIn and reach out to people who work at companies she would like to work.

Hi! I graduated last May w/ a bachelor’s in Communications, I decided to stay in visuals and use my styling skills as a form of visual communication. I would suggest looking at positions in fields such as finance, marketing, fashion, and tech. Make a list of companies that she is interested and go directly to their websites, go wild, dream big companies that she would think would never consider her. As an alumni she should still have access to her university’s career sites such as Wayup and Handshake, these sites are always looking for recent graduates. If not set up accounts with them.

I would definitely recommend she network and try to get referrals, especially in this job market. This is such a challenging time to be looking for a new role because the job market is awful. Sometimes a referral can help.

Unfortunately the job market is super tough right now so its not just her. I'd recommend still being open to internships even if she graduated. You never know what types of connections you can make.

She's still a recent grad and can ride that wave for a while still. Encourage her not to beat herself up too much.

Great advice given above! Entry level and recent grads are having a much harder time than others because of the trickle down effect unfortunately. My niece graduated with honors and a degree in journalism and has been searching for over a year.

I can relate to your daughter. Many years ago I was a mass comm graduate in a bad economy. I chose to continue on and get my masters degree. I agree with all the comments suggesting internships. One benefit is that she lives in a large city. The remote roles are extremely competitive right now especially with more companies going back into the office. Digital is so hot right now. Maybe get a certification through the American Marketing Association.
