Straddle for as long as you can! Don't let them put you into a box. Both are viable long term so pick whichever you love the most.
The reason your role has both components is because both of those disciplines I have a cross-functional aspect to them.
A strategist that can see the through the matrix is better equipped to deliver bomb briefs.
An analyst that understands how data is being used after they finish can help to uncover additional nuggets no one thought to request.
Last thing to consider, which can you do freelance? My bestie was group strategy director at cpb, and she mostly just freelances now. Because who wants to work a regs 9-5?
I think that being fluent in both is a unique value proposition. The sad truth in most places is that analytics and strategy don’t work closely enough together. Tell them you can come in and fix that. You’ll stand out as an applicant on either side
The freelance question is a great one...I’d also ask what you like best. The things you like to do generally lead you to greater success.
Straddle both. Advertising will never truly value analytics and if you try and go in house or to a platform/SF situation you’ll lack the rigor they’re after in data science. You can be the smartest person in the room when it comes to data relatively easy and most clients appreciate strategists who understand the principles as it relates to their business success
