There's no law requiring a company to provide severance during layoffs, which I didn't know. They do it at their own discretion. It's tied to the length of time you were in your position. I received a better severance package than my manager did because she had been at the company for only 1 year compared to my 5 years. It's all up to the company how they approach it though. "It is usually based on length of employment for which an employee is eligible upon termination. There is no requirement in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for severance pay."
