New to freelancing and discussing a potential graphic design project with a boutique agency. Aside from a brief 15 minute "get to know you" over Zoom, there hasn't been any communication around fee, timelines, or involvement.

Then out of the blue the hiring mgr. / CD emails with a potential project earlier this week and has begun throwing client meeting holds on my calendar.

I'm not saying "no" outright, but I want to be cautious. Any advice on how to handle the situation? I

Reach out and let them know that you are happy to be on the call and you look forward to working with them. In anticipation of commencing work, here are my standard terms - hourly rate, payment terms, etc. Offer to draft an SOW in order to expedite signing before commencing work. You may also ask what is the process on their end for getting freelance approval. You don't want to risk not getting paid if they don't get proper approvals. Also, offer to speak directly with HR to make it easier for them.

Like, they never officially offered you the position? I think there is nothing wrong with clarifying. Everywhere is understaffed right now, and in my experience HR never communicates with anyone. So this CD may think you are hired. I'd let them know what's up so they can fix it on their end.

Whatever you do, get a contract before you start working! Ask who you should reach out to about on boarding perhaps. And congrats!

Need advice: do you tell your manager that you’re unhappy or do you just leave?

I’m being taken advantage of with being thrown so much work and really don’t see my salary increasing to be in line with my coworkers doing similar work. I’m a consistent high performer - management reviews tell me that much.

My coworker did mention to the manager that they’re not being paid well for the work they do, and our manager took it personally and told them they’re ungrateful 🥲

It’s so nice that every agency laying off people, have those left standing (and other agencies) trying to hustle jobs for their unemployed friends, but there are also a ton of people who were unemployed prior to Covid...so no severance, job hunting lot longer, and not earning income for longer time...hurting even MORE due to quarantine.

Advice needed!
I have been a strategy and planning associate for a year and a half (first job out of college), I found that I'm not really cut out for this sector of advertising and would like to get more into the creative area. I've applied to countless copywriting jobs but only get rejections. Does anyone have any advice? Are there other areas I should be looking? I'm getting so discouraged at this point so any feedback would be helpful.

I have never done freelance work and was given the opportunity to take part in a cool project. My problem is it’s a proactive case by a brand new agency and it’s their own project, meaning there’s no client who pays for the work. For them it’s PR for their new business, but I think they’re expecting me to work completely pro bono. It does have potential for a great case and I’d love to have it in my portfolio, but is it reasonable for them not to compensate me? Any tips on how to approach this?
