The fact that people are focused on number of years rather than the skills actually needed to be a manager tells you everything about the problems we are seeing with today’s workforce.
Industry promotions are title inflation. Also their salary increases are much lower for each promotion compared to consulting
This is not true
Are you a DL? Feel free to send me a DM and I can send you the ppt slide from HR

8? How is that possible?
With 3 years at A and 4 as a SA that's still too long. I can't imagine adding another year to either level
Why would I cry a river? That’s exactly what I said… multiple times above. Clearly a skills issue.
This is not true. I've been seeing the S& group has been promoting people faster than PwC non-S&. 1 yr to Sm, and 1 yr to D. dont know how but i guess their sr partners have more weight in the 'informal' decision making when allocating promotion slots
It’s cute, only when you know that they added SM level in the mix not too long ago (like 6-7 yrs ago?). It used to be M to D and Pr (non cpa partner)
8 years of professional experience is nothing, and AI will make it change so much more significantly
I did two years at analyst, two years at consultant, then three years at senior consultant.
Another year at consultant wouldn't have been a particularly big deal and I am not sure it necessarily would bother me what my title was so long as I was being paid well.
The pay in consulting was significantly higher than industry then though that came with significant travel and a lot more hours. Living on the road however helped me pay off student loans a lot faster.
Sorry, what does Manager mean for Strategy&?
I'm at LEK and it's a 4 years to C, which is one post-MBA level, and then 2-3 years to make M, so it's similar.
M is a 2-3 role, then it's 1-2 years as Principal before making Partner.
M1 for us is 241k base
Can confirm this is true (7yrs) - spent 3 yrs at the associate level / 4 yrs at the SA level because of homegrown pathway - was up for manager but didn’t make the cut (despite having 100% ratings) and was CTL this year without warning because my DL and I were not close so they did not want to / have to go up to bat for me like their friends - sure there are the occasional 1 offs that speed through the ranks and play the game perfectly
This isn’t true. Rather, it’s a very oversimplified version of the truth.
—you are not talking about strategy&. You are talking about legacy ESV. The other strategy& groups don’t have this restriction.
— This (undergrad minimum) was our policy pre-Covid for all strategy&. Only sa1A to SA1B is new(ish) and it’s only for legacy ESV
- these timelines change every 2-4 years depending on business conditions. And,, shocker, business conditions are terrible. Especially in ESV-strategy& (minus 1 group) for the last 2 years
- a lot of this is a consequence of promoting everyone who could breathe a few years ago, ending up with poor talent at SA and M — which we have finally, finally managed out.
- “standard” is not “minimum”. I’m glad they’re reminding Directors and Partners to not just promote people left and right.
It’s happening there too? I guess too many cooks!
