Best consulting firms without the massive ego?
Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?

read the damn report. so much work went into it. if you don’t know about a topic you can just admit it.
you don’t understand what you’re talking about and it’s okay
1.6M for 3 years of work? What did McK staff summer interns exclusively here?
No idea why people are defending the report. It’s utterly insane that in the era of AI you should pay anyone to conduct research in this way, based on a massive lack of domain knowledge.
I’ve been around my fair share of the consultancies and used to be a management consultant. There’s a lot to be said for the skills a management consultant has. But to pretend McKinsey analysts had anything meaningful to say beyond what actual sanitation experts could say on these incredibly commonplace practices, is a joke.
Hubris like this is causing our industry to collapse, not AI.
Lol what a weird position. You hate consultants but you love AI and think it can run entire sanitation research projects for one of the largest most complex cities in the world completely autonomously. You must be a tech bro that worships peter thiel or something.
Disclaimer - I’m not part of McK nor do I have a vested interest in this report.
While the conclusion of containerization is laughable since it’s prevalent across most cities in the US, I do believe a lot of research has gone into it. The entire report is available at https://dsny.cityofnewyork.us/wp-content/uploads/reports/future-of-trash-april-2023.pdf
It talks about the current state of trash collection including the volume and impact and segments the entire NYC residential by different criteria. I’m sure other firms can execute the same engagement as well as McK but the intent to gather agreement with all stakeholders for consensus on a difficult topic.
I don’t think NYC internal staff could have gathered and presented the report so effectively.
Fun fact - The trash containerization contract was already executed and paid for. Mamdani himself stated this trash containerization was the previous administration’s successes. AND NYC is implementing the recommendations, in a phased manner. The canceled contract was another one with social services.
How much is he paying McK to cancel them?
As someone who has family working in the mayor’s office, I can tell you that the current administration thinks this report is trash 🗑️
Sometimes you just gotta sunk-cost fallacy to get things done (I didn’t read the report)
There’s got to be a bit more to this story?
....and you wonder why people often think "consultants" are useless.
