MOST of my ESL students have been hard workers; this encourages me. SOME of my ESL students have attempted to teach me THEIR native language (usually Spanish); this gave me a whole new perspective on trying to learn a new language while dealing with the pressures of teenage angst. A FEW of my ESL students have chosen to assimilate into the pocket of miscreants posing as STUDENTS that inhabit all schools. Short shrift.
I have been pleasantly surprised to find that MOST of my ESL students have a better grasp of English grammar than my native speakers, so they get to take the lead in the class discussion and in helping their group members. We love to hear each other read, so ESL students read aloud with assistance when needed, and I get to read to the class so that ALL students get to hear fluency and inflection. (I’m their Drama Queen!)
Overall, I will say that my ESL students have strengths and weaknesses just like my native speakers, but they offer me perks😊

I’ve worked with students for over 20 years in different capacities and luckily I’ve had experience teaching students with various language backgrounds (ESL, EO, ELL, Newcomers, etc.)
In the end it’s basically adjusting to someone’s need and watching where to take your student next, a true journey.
