Does anyone here work for Silicon Valley Bank? They recently acquired Boston Private. I’m a candidate for a job at Boston Private. Wondering if SVB is planning layoffs in the near term at BP? Also, does anyone know the anticipated benefits to be rolled out from SVB as the parent company? Specifically interested in health insurance providers. Thanks in advance for any information! As someone who has been around for a while, I can tell you that the firm does take WLB quite seriously. *generally*, weekend work is rare, Fridays you get off around 5-6om, and time-offs are considered sacrosanct.
Now, undoubtedly this has become worse in recent times. But management has taken note, and I believe they are trying their best to address some of the challenges. In grand scheme of things, I believe this to be a passing phase, and expect things to get better in coming months.
So if you’re considering joining, I’d say don’t let this be a deal breaker for you, and explore the merit of the offer on other aspects.
WLB isn’t great, since joining I’ve worked 8-1am pretty consistently M-TH a bit more lax on Fridays
I will say the culture is great and I think the people at the firm are wonderful to work with
Overall, I would recommend but keep in mind WLB isn’t the best

WLB is bad right now, which is why we are hiring! It’s not something we designed for.
And yes, A1, WLB is better as a partner

For me personally, I think WFH helped a lot actually. A lot of my time before was travel — more than project teams since I was often going multiple places per week. So bringing that to zero added a lot of working time to my day. So I’d say less than 60 hours during the pandemic on average, but there were some short periods perhaps above that.
On your last question, I don’t feel I’ve sacrificed my life for the job. I think they’re mutually reinforcing. I like my job and derive satisfaction from it in general. And it provides a very nice life. So if I have to do something that might be viewed as a “sacrifice” like take a call or answer an email while on vacation, I don’t view it as a sacrifice. It was probably an interesting problem or client situation to solve in the first place. And being interested in solving the problems is what paid for the vacation in the first place!
I've been wondering this too and am particularly interested in how WLB evolves as you go up in rank. Part of why I'm interested in OW is the idea that they invest in your potential at achieving partner...but does the partnership just feel like more punishment or is it actually a reward for the grind?
I'm willing to sacrifice a lot right now for future goals but don't want to end up in chains my ENTIRE career.

WLB varies by practice and project more than by office. Also, WLB has definitely taken a hit with WFH even if there are individual projects that seem to have figured it out.
What practice group are you looking at joining?
I’d say on average WLB has taken a toll during WFH but some teams have definitely figured it out. So would not say it is a rule.
