It depends on your interests. We do a lot more strategic advising. Specifically, m&a, due diligence, corporate strategic planning, strategic org planning and design, business transformation.
But I have friends who actually care more about deep IT system integration. For this type of work, you would need to go to a Big 4.
Not one piece of work is better than the other. It just comes down to what you want to do.
Such a nice and balanced discussion. You guys have all grown up so much since the time i joined fishbowl.
Yes
There’s no such thing as a “Big 4 project”. That category is too broad. A big 4 firm is a conglomeration if many practices. At PwC we have Strategy, Management Consulting, Risk Consulting, Tech Consulting. The work is very different across these groups. The strategy practice is most similar to MBB. In our case we often compete for the same work and win our share.
Mck and BCG are building the capabilities to deliver a similar suite of services to the Big 4 firms.
It will remain true that the generalist practices within these firms do the most interesting work (from my perspective but not all). But the definition of an “MBB project” will be quite different.
Define MBB work.
I’m at big 4 and do strategy work all the time. Certainly will partner with the client on implementation if needed which usually MBB won’t
@s2 I know I’m doing it on an everyday basis
It really depends on your interests. My roommate works for Bain and basically only does business cases, zbb/zbo type projects, etc. He does a lot of modeling in excel and that’s about it really
I on the other hand don’t find excel modeling to be interesting and prefer strategy projects where I get to be creative. I have gotten to do some really cool digital marketing strategy projects where I’ve created personas, customer journies, defined customer experience strategy, etc. MBB May have more prestige, but I would never be happy doing what my roommate and his colleagues do
Define the work and define your interests
@bcg2 I’m working in due diligence now and looking for a change. Would you like to share some teams that do it in bcg? Would love to have your input. Let me know and I can drop a burner
P2, there are many types of due diligence and all are very different. Everything from the type of work to rates and skills required. Commercial, Ops, Q of E, HR, IT, etc are all very different beasts
^^ "Implementation if needed” as if its a cake walk.
