I thought it was mostly because it was free, didn't need registered accounts, offered meetings with video tiles for more than 5 people at once, and it had silly backgrounds. It had all this from the start of COVID while everyone else took a month or two to play catch-up.
+1. I would also add Zoom is a startup, scrappy, and can easily pivot to needs. Google and Microsoft are corporations and unfortunately not flexible/quick with producing new features and launching.
I work in music and zoom is light years better than meets when streaming music or videos . I use zoom any time I have to stream music or video or do a webinar. I prefer the convenience of google meet for normal meetings but hate it if I’m presenting and need to share audio
+1 to many of these comments. Also:
* People like to go with things others they know recommend and the more people adopt it, the more the people who know them to do. Tons of people adopted it over covid. It’s become the Kleenex of video meetings ie want to do a zoom
* Cool ux-focussed features like simple ‘hands up’, breakout rooms, ability to react (thumbs up etc) etc make it user friendly, useful and fun
It's pretty incredbile tbh. I think a big part of it has been their bottom up distribution and the fact that it doesn't have the brand perception issues of being another clunky piece of enterprise software that's a product from Google or MSFT

All of the above, plus a truism: consumer brands are sticky.
From user perspective I’m also stumped as to how the product has achieved market dominance. I have not been experiencing anything exceptional about Zoom as a product. Despite it coming from a company that isn’t one of the big tech giants, Zoom has its own privacy issues that creep me out as much as the next enterprise software.
