At what point is it appropriate to ask compensation range? Getting a lot of reach outs on LinkedIn from recruiters and want to know if it’s appropriate to ask in an initial conversation about a role with a recruiter if they reach out to me. I was told that I was the chosen candidate for a new role that I applied for which will be promotion, I just recently received my offer and was surprised and decided to start negotiating. My boss immediately said that this is offer, either take it or lose it and no negotiating, and was only given a day to decide whether I want it or not, so he repost the position, and was also told that I was going about it the wrong way for trying to negotiate, Is this wrong of me to negotiate?

My company was acquired last year & new terrritoy assignments were made Jan 1st. The old AEs had until the end of Jan to close out deals they were working to receive 100% commissions & quota relief. The new AE taking over received 50% comm if the deals closed in Jan. After Feb 1st, the new AE taking on the account received 100% comm and the old AE received nothing. The two deals I had worked for months and in procurement Feb 1 close last week at 445k & $399k. $60+k comm to new AE - $0 to me. 😩

OFFER: 65k with good benefits
EXPERIENCE: 1 year SEO, 3 years data analyst
COUNTER-OFFER: 87k same benefits
REASON 1: programming skills which I use on the job (SQL, R, Google Apps Script). Aka I do more than SEO.
REASON 2: I’ve received multiple other offers for data analyst jobs paying 85k-100k
CONTEXT: I’ve been working with this company as a contractor for about a year now and have really enjoyed it but I want more money! Lol
