I use them to help with my mental health. I take days off to recharge when needed.
Chief
Exactly!!! For so long I wouldn't take days off, but after getting super sick last year, I realized that my health is worth a day off if I need it.
I never used them. But when you don’t get compensation for not using them and only one accrues per year, I’ve learned to space them out and use them. My mental health deserves it.

I totally agree. I do not let myself feel guilty anymore. At least at this point, I am going to take a day if I need it.
I use my sick days for doctors appointments! Sometimes I’ll blur the line and use sick days for appointments that aren’t necessarily with a doctor (car things, vet appointments, home maintenance things etc.). Basically - if it’s something I’ve just got to do because I’m a functioning member of society I take a sick day but if it’s something strictly fun for me I’ll use it as a personal day.
We get 10 days the first year, 12 days the second year and 15 days starting the 3rd year plus 2 personal days as a Para. Teachers get the same plus an extra personal day. I basically use sick for sick and my personal days for fun. We can convert 1 sick day to a personal day each year if we need it. Our days roll over, which came in handy a few years ago when I had to use 72 of them due to a car accident and was paid the whole time I was out.
Use them. Use them all

Our sick days roll over, but i am not letting personal days go to waste ever again.

So can we take a "sick" day when we are sick of hateful attitudes, snarkiness, and endless forms, docs, and sheets?
Chief
Oh, you got that right. I actually had to snicker when I read your reply
In two different districts I had to use sick days for the deaths of family members because bereavement days were not a thing.
My district just added bereavement days in the last couple of years. We did not have them during the pandemic, when several of us lost family members.
Chief
We only have one bereavement day. I used up all my personal days when my sister passed.
Depends on where you live. I use personal days first. Any unused sick days in California get added to your time for pension. In Connecticut I left 130+ sick days for nothing
I rarely use personal days, because we have to give them “a good reason” and get permission ahead of time, which is rarely given. I do use my sick days, but very sparingly. I have kids, so sometimes I need them to take care of my sick kids. I did take today off, because I woke up with a migraine. I may take two days off next month to extend a weekend for a trip with a friend. Fortunately, I don’t need a sub, because I am a counselor. I hate to miss though, because counseling jobs are not easy to get and keep.

Funny that teachers have to jump through hurdles to get time off, but admin can take time off to attend multiple conferences and meeting. Thankfully my boss is good about understanding when we need off
Ao, they really come from the same bank of time. I always used sick days for things like doctor appointments because the check ups kept me from being sick and dental appointments were either because I had a tooth issue or I was trying to maintain my fragile dental health. Personal days, in my district, were defined as business that couldn’t be conducted outside work hours
Chief
This makes perfect sense. Personal days are important, because some things just can't be taken care of after school is out
