Not saying it’s impossible, but the longer you take, the harder it gets to pivot. At 8 yoe, what will your title be then, SM? With no real-life modeling experience, you’ll realistically have the skill set of an IB associate (maybe even analyst), and be significantly older (and potentially slower/less willing to grind) than your peers.
Maybe consider why it is that you want to transition to IB. Do you have a genuine interest in finance or is it the prestige and comp that appeal to you? If the latter, maybe consider A&M in 2 years time instead…
W/ 2 yoe in FDD, you would realistically come in as a M and clear between 250-300 at today’s rates (maybe a bit more if we continue to experience inflation). If you’re a top performer you could make D in a year and clear 3-400+ on average, with potential to break 500+. Not IB level comp but getting close.
If you’re really intent on pivoting to IB, I’d skip FDD entirely and either recruit directly into a small shop from audit or MBA route at this point.
I’ve never seen anyone make this type of move - leaving earlier is much much better. You will likely be limited to small boutique shops which this trajectory. Consider what your end goal is and if banking is really necessary to get there.
I made the move earlier this year from Big 4 (4.5 years audit, 1.5 FDD) to PE. The move I made is about as late as I’ve seen anyone move.
Good luck.
Good is relative; but yes I think it’s good (I am in Canada. It might be 1.5-2x in the US)
I went in as an Associate
I’ll never understand the want to go into IB
Good amount of money with little to no time to enjoy it. Excluding the fact that there will be intense stress compared to other types of jobs.

Moving at the Associate level, i don’t see how. All MBA associates going in at basically almost 30 as well.

don’t think a bank is gonna pay someone $400k for 6 years of audit and 4 years of FDD experience.
